best "prosumer" EEG?

Post by Sirca » Wed Oct 13, 2010 10:46 pm

O2 saturation is important and fairly easily monitored by readily available pulse oximeters. Are there any decent EEG monitors that could help me monitor the quality of my sleep with respect to the time I spend in each stage of sleep? I'm aware of the Zeos, but get the impression it's more of a toy than a real EEG. I can't afford a Zeos, so I probably can't afford something more sophisticated, but I'm still curious.

Me too. I am fortunate in that I could afford something semi-substantial, but do not want to attach millions of leads, etc. Some device with minimal intrusion would work best as I am most interested in how much sleep we lose when we use all this other machinery.

This whole discussion on machine standards, etc. is fascinating. We trust our progress to being informed by the very machines that are supposed to help us. That's a little much of a stacked deck - and I totally doubt any sleep physician has really investigated what machines are really best and most informative - they spend all their time trying to convince insurers to give just about anything to their patients.

I wouldn't mind a few extra leads to get info on my sleep stages, Jon. Heck, I already have headgear holding pillows in my nose and an oximeter taped to my finger. My thinking (such as it is) is that nocturnal hypoxemia is important, but only one part of the sleep equation. It's a very important part. But if I could monitor my sleep stages, that would cover another important part. At least until I get all this sorted out.

Hey, I just want to know if I am sleeping uninterrupted! That would be a wonderful bit of data if that was all I could get - though it seems to be elusive.

There are no machines that can run EEGs. Not even a modified 10-20 version to determine sleep staging.

Calist - if all you can be is negative, just go away - you're so unpleasant! People here are trying to find ways of dealing with their problems. Sometimes we're right, sometimes we're wrong, and sometimes there's room for learning. But at least we're trying and all you can do is pour cold, sour water over everything. I don't know (or care at this point) what your motivation is but it's not helping anyone - and we need encouragement, not that!

Well it might help if you paid attention to what people are discussing. We are talking bout the possibility of acquiring a lower end EEG - no mention was made about it being connected to a machine. There are lots of EEG's that can be purchased (yes, by anyone willing to pay the price) - and you just wire yourself up, hook the data stream into a computer and let it go all night. Many people here, given the right equipment, could do this easily.

Yes, Calist, you are replaceable. You can always clean the used sheets in the lab when you are no longer needed. Remember you are one small cog in the wheel at the lower end of the food chain in sleep medicine which is just a small part of medicine in general. You may laugh at the MD's, but they laugh at you. And frankly there are the business types that, in turn, laugh at them too. Remember, they are the ones profiting from all of this. I presume you get a salary and a few benefits - not a piece of the action like they do. When you get older, you will be dumped for a younger cheaper model - just like in any career.

I don't like to be mean, but I tell it like it is (and in this case, you are so deserving of the truth...). Get off your high horse and realize that you will eventually be landfill like the rest of us. That is the way it goes for all of us - yourself included. So lighten up and get a life!

Well then it sounds like you have it all figured out. Go run an EEG and tell me how it turns out.

Calist - on top of everything else, are you a qualified interpreter of EEG studies?

Uh huh -- just like you claimed that NO ventilator, including the Trilogy 100, runs AVAPS. You were wrong on the ventilator. I have no knowledge about machines running EEG's so I don't know if you're wrong on that too. But I DO know that you are wrong about the Trilogy Ventilator AND too pompous and arrogant to admit it.

I'm posting this here so that in case anyone hasn't seen the thread where Calist berates me about my ventilator, please don't take anything he says like the above as fact. Whether he is who he claims to be, or not, he IS fallible.

Seems to me, Calist, that you're pissing off a lot of people around here. I'm finding it amusing how many people are telling you to beat the pavement.

Ha Ha.....

If I wanted to go out and buy an EEG - I'm sure I could make it work. Most people here could. The problem with people like you is that they don't actually understand that they are bottom feeders and looked upon as such.

Most people here wouldn't give you the time of day in the real world - even if you didn't open your mouth and stick your foot in it half the time. Live with it. Whatever your profession, no one gives a damn about what you have to say! Welcome to the real world.

Right so, go and do it.

Sitting around trying to convince me of how wrong I am is not going to get you an EEG interpreting machine any faster.

I am pretty sure I could design and build the 'front end' (preamplfiers) for such a device, but would get hung up trying to do the recording part.

And if you don't want to end up as landfill, volunteer to feed my lions.....

Its simple, you buy an EEG - and then hire someone to interpret it for you telling them to do it right or they don't get paid! And no, I am not kidding one little bit. Geez - when are you going to figure out how this world works?

$500 for me, I'll score it.

$500 for a neurologist I know, he'll interpret. He'll even write up a report and sign it, make it all official.

It'll take us a few weeks to get around to it though. Kinda backed up right now.
