Dr. Weil - Sleep Tip

Post by Emilia » Mon Oct 11, 2010 6:23 am

Today, Dr. Weil's site has this Tip of the Day: Trouble Sleeping? Try Jasmine - If you experience anxiousness and troubled sleep, but don't want to use prescription or over-the-counter sedatives, consider jasmine. Researchers have found that the scent of jasmine is as effective as Valium and similar drugs for relieving anxiety, promoting more peaceful sleep, and reducing anxiety upon waking. Particular jasmine fragrances were even shown to have the same neurochemical mechanism of action as barbiturates.

You can get the benefits of jasmine by taking a warm bath or shower with jasmine-scented soaps before bedtime, or placing a diffuser containing jasmine in your bedroom. Other recommendations for getting quality rest include paying attention to your sleep hygiene - don't drink anything containing caffeine or alcohol before bedtime, keep your bedroom at a comfortable temperature and make sure there is minimal or no light when you go to sleep. It's also helpful to spend time outdoors during the day, and take short, daytime naps when you feel tired and are able to do so. ( http://www.drweil.com/drw/u/TIP03848/Tr ... smine.html )

I wonder why Pur-Sleep doesn't have Jasmine among their scents.........at least not that I see on their site.
Yes, that blue eyed beauty is my cat! He is a seal point, bi-color Ragdoll. I adopted him in '08 from folks who could no longer care for him. He is a joy and makes me smile each and every day.

Hi,

aha. Jasmin...I have had such a bush in my garden, but I killed him this summer, he was was to big...

No coffeine or alcohol before sleeping is absolute correct. I drink my last coffee in teh afternoon, and I'm a non-drinker, absolutly no alcohol.

Regards,
Astrophytum

Actually, in the category of science journalism, I'd give that article an A+

Well, sure, if you want to let mere science get in the way of aromatherapy. And you wouldn't want that, now, would you, M.D.Hosehead?

But I guess the NHS should get a few things right over there across the pond, though, at least now and then, since, according to them, "only the Chinese People’s Liberation Army, the Wal-Mart supermarket chain and the Indian Railways directly employ more people." -- http://www.nhs.uk/NHSEngland/thenhs/abo ... rview.aspx

Wow.

I still say, who are they to mess with my hyperbolic aromatherapy placebos? They're just jealous, manipulative spoilsports, the whole lot of them!

I love how their description of themselves starts out: "Since its launch in 1948, the NHS has grown to become the world’s largest publicly funded health service. It is also one of the most efficient, most egalitarian and most comprehensive."

Oh those zany Brits with their self-deprecating understatements!
