Idea: Making ResMed S8 Smart Cards

Post by jdm2857 » Fri Oct 08, 2010 2:38 pm

Has anyone attempted to use an expired smart credit card with an S8 and ResScan?

The contacts on the cards are identical, so physically all that would have to be done is cutting down the credit card to match the ResMed card, taking into account where the contacts will wind up. I don't know whether the S8 will wipe a card it doesn't recognize, or whether that would have to be done manually.

I'm asking because the cards are not available for sale in the U.S., and they're expensive from foreign sources. Those of us who use DMEs (or even doctors that read the cards) should be able to get new ones from them. But those who don't...

Anyone know anything about SmartCards?

I checked on mine out of a Dish Network DVR, the contacts aren't the same as my Remstar APAP, so I gave up. Jim

Do you know why they are no longer being sold in the US??

No, but no US site I've checked has them, or the card readers for that matter. They are available from foreign sources.

I have to assume that these items are still available to doctor's offices and DMEs.

Most DMEs will sell you a card for $25.

But will they sell them to non-regular customers?

An S8 ResScan card is based on SmartCard Technology and is physically just a narrow SmartCard. The key question is whether there is some form of secure handshake, between the card reader/writer and the card (as part of the design), or if the Smartcard technology is simply being used in a unsecured way just for its onboard memory capacity

Smartcards are now being given away as part of various hotel loyality programs (at least in my part of the world), so the cost of your experimenting to see if you idea would work might by literally zero!

Cheers,

Bill
