IMPROVE COMFORT CURVE SEAL WITH SHOELACES!

Post by CareS » Tue Nov 08, 2005 12:06 pm

This actually works and is easy and inexpensive. I have been wracking my brain for the past few months trying to figure a way to improve the seal on the comfort curve mask. This is my latest innovation. OK here goes!
1. Buy a pair of ordinary shoelaces (any colour will do) at least 27-28 inches long.
2. Have a good piece of adhesive or similar tape handy about one inch in lenth.
3. Place the comfort curve mask in front of you with the Respironics writing directly in front of you and with everything attached but the machine hose.
4. Criss Cross the Shoelaces (imagine an X on its side. Center the shoelace X on the Respironics name. TAPE THE SHOELACE X IN PLACE IN THE CENTRE on to the name.
The X over the barrel is where the elbow joints join and pull it closer to the nose.
5. One length of the crossed shoe lace should be over the elbow joint and the other should be under on both sides.
Bring the lower shoelaces on either side under the air vent on the elbow and tie each side into a single knot with the upper shoelace. I suppose you could tie a double but it might be difficult to undo.
After knoting, bring the two remaining ends of the shoelace up to the headgear on each side. Place one strand under the headgear, the other over and tie the shoelaces to the headgear on both sides of the mask approximately where the headgear connects to the cheekpads.
I am interested to find out how you guys make out with this. I call this "the Cradle". CareS

Any color will do? On a mask with color options? You can't be serious!

comfort seal with shoelaces

Post by macoil2 » Wed Nov 09, 2005 7:15 am

Sounds, like a Rube Goldberg invention.my mask is fitted with "softcap" and quick release clip.Goes on easily like a hat no leakage.

Hope this helps

This does sound a little complicated. I'm not clear on how the shoelaces are creating a better seal. Is it to flatten out the interface (to get a better seal)?

Improve Comfort Curve

To Oh to breathe,
I agree, it does sound complicated but really, it couldn't be easier. It is simply a matter of criss crossing the laces, tying (knotting them) over and under the elbows, with both hands pulling the two laces on either side up to the part of the headgear to the spot that it feels comfortable and seals better on the nose and then marking that spot on the headgear. As an after-thought I sewed a loop on to the headgear on the marked spot and am able to adjust the tension on the tied laces. I invented this because my own comfort curve does not seal worth a darn and with this shoelace contraption I have named (the Cradle) my seal has gone from very poor to three and four stars, depending on the night. Since you live in the same area, perhaps you would like to stop in and I will show you personally.
I would appreciate any suggestions from my fellow cpapers on how I might demonstrate this better. Diagram, Photos? let me know.
