OT - Has anyone here tried Diatomaceous Earth?

Post by dieselgal » Wed Sep 15, 2010 2:07 pm

I have been reading up on this and started it myself about 10 days ago and thought I would see if others here have heard of it or tried it?

Geez, what will people put in their bodies next? I can see lots of reasons NOT to ingest it on purpose. That said, when I was in college, one prof said that McDonalds used DE in their shakes as a thickening agent. Don't know whether that's true or not, but after looking at all those sharp little edges of glass (they're the skeletons of diatoms, marine plankton with hard silica "tests" or cell walls), I don't think I'd want to try it.

DE is great for water filtration. I think that it is also used in cosmetic mud packs.

isn't the pool stuff VERY dangerous? I was told that inhaling the dust from that powder can cause cancer.
When i got a new pool filter i changed to a sand filter. I didn't like fumbling around in a cloud of cancerous dust scoping DE powder into my skimmer.

DE is available in a food grade product. Actually I have tried it and don't speak well of it except it did appear to kill some worms in me.

However it has its followers and as far as I am concerned they can keep it.

Dieselgal, if you want to pm me I can share more of what I know.

Hi deiselgal, good to see you around here again. I have tried DE (successfully) for pest control, but not for medicinal purposes. Was interesting to read about it. Hope things are well with you.

Remember what mom used to say? "If everyone else jumped off a bridge would you do it too?"

That's what I think of this. Arsenic is a natural substance that helps you lose weight, lowers your blood pressure (to 0) and "cures" you of worms and parasites too, but you won't see me taking it anytime soon (DISCLAIMER: this is facetious! Arsenic is a dangerous poison--don't take it!).

DE has its place in some food processing, but taking it straight for medicinal purposes is just plumb crazy!

Used as media in water softener. Back flush with brine solution, ready to reuse. Jim
