Newbie is still sleepy

Post by jmcd » Wed Sep 01, 2010 9:34 am

Started using CPAP on Monday and was looking forward to feeling great on Tuesday but found I was still having episodes of daytime sleepiness. Read in some other posts that it takes time to start feeling better but was also wondering if other users felt even sleepier than before. While I'm comfortable with the CPAP running through the night and feel like I am sleeping, I can't help wondering if the sleep isn't as good because I'm getting use to the machine. Any ideas?

Are you monitoring your data to be sure you have reduced or eliminated your events? What is your AHI and are you either having mask leaks or doing any mouth breathing? All those will impact your recovery and how you feel. I just completed night 6 and I feel somewhat better, but you cannot expect to undo years of sleep deprivation in a day or a week or a month, even. It is a process...... and it will take some time.

If you do not have the software for your machine to monitor your therapy, consider investing in that so you can be pro-active with your own recovery.

Best of luck!! We look forward to reading about your progress....

What does your data say? AI? HI? Snores? Mask leak?

How well did you think you slept (subjective judgement)?

Must say that I'm very disappointed in Resmed. I don't have software, CPAP.com told me the manufacturer pulled the software from the market. Called Resmed and was told that the software is intended for clinicians and not patients and that it is not available. All my machine tells me is the number of hours used/nights used. Also asked my DME provider about the software and they don't carry it. Any ideas?

Send a private message (PM) to Uncle Bob.. he will send you the secret link to getting it. It is all rather clandestine stuff.......

I believe you can also buy it via a vendor on eBay.... also a download from there.

After enabling sleep quality on my machine I see that I had good mask fit and AHI of 2.4. Having the information is a huge relief as I live and sleep alone (except for my dogs) and I'm just learning to use the therapy so I don't know if my mask is leaking. It is very early in the game for me so I'm going to give it a bit of time. I am dumbfounded as to why my clinician didn't turn the sleep quality option on. Wouldn't you want patients to be monitoring their health? Healthcare in America - gotta love it!

Thanks again to those who offered advice.

Imagine telling a diabetic not to monitor their blood sugar!

I think I'll use this if someone at the sleep disorders clinic gives me a hard time about enabling information on my machine (thank you to those who shared ) and tracking my own progress!

AHI of 2.6 is pretty good. You're definitely getting better sleep.

Hello and welcome. About being sleepier - once your body and brain know they CAN get some real sleep, it would be understandble for the desire to increase. If you had untreated sleep apnea, expect to do some "catching up". Be kind to yourself and give yourself some extra sleep starting out. It should level off once you're have recouperated. If your treatment data continues to good but you continue to be tired for a few weeks, you may want to check into if you could have more than one thing going on contributing to the daytime sleepiness.
