I am so sorry for your loss. We've had to put two dear pets down in the last year, so I definitely understand your pain. Cherish the memories of your beloved pet.

Thanks everyone. You are the best. Such caring people here. I do miss him already. God, this house seems empty.

I'm so sorry for your loss, Jeff. Yes, the house will seem empty, but his spirit is still there.

We lost our 16-year-old cat Oscar a couple of weeks ago.
It's still a bit raw.
Sorry about your beautiful Buddy.
I like to think a spirit are pure and generous as a loving pet cannot simply fade away;
But pass to such a place that we may never see, as we are not worthy.

Awww, Jeff, such sad news. I opened this thread very focused on not crying at knowing how awful this kind of thing feels. Didn't want my nose all stopped up when getting ready to mask up. Jerry (6PtStar), I hold you responsible for my even later bedtime tonight. Wonderful sentimental snotty-nose story.

Jeff, 13.5 years of craziness - what a blessing! I'm sure your family will be telling the funny stories for years to come. My condolences at your loss.

Kathy

I'm so sorry, Jeff.

You did the right thing...the kind, loving thing...for your good dog at the end of his life.

Rocky was fortunate to have been such a well loved member of your family.

You have sent him on a journey to a land free from pain, not because you did not love him, but because you loved him too much to force him to stay.

You might find http://www.petloss.com helpful reading, along with the Monday Evening Candlelight Ceremony.

And of course, there's The Rainbow Bridge:

Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge.

When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge.
There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together.
There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.

All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor; those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by.
The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.

They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent; his eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.

You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.

Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together....

[quote="JeffH"]Our Red Heeler Rocky. Had to put him down today. 13.5 years old. What a crazy, but good dog.

Sorry to hear that, that is the reason I don't have a dog anymore. I can't stand for them to suffer or have to be put down. I miss having a dog badly but just can't go through it again, and my health is a factor, I wouldn't want to leave a pet behind. Nothing I can say can ease your loss, all of mine still follow me daily. Jim

My condolences as well. We're cat people, I lost one very young cat a few years ago, and my sister-in-law just had one of her cats put down last week because he had all sorts of health issues that were no longer manageable. I realize you will say the relationship with dogs is different RIP Rocky!

Those of us who love our pets all share your sadness, Jeff. To me, my pets are closer than family members because of their unconditional love and friendship, no matter what. I know you will miss him now and always.

You are a very nice fellow yourself.

Sorry to hear of your loss Jeff. We lost our Carey after 17 years of unconditional love. We have always had a dog (or two) around the place, so we got another. She's a "rescue" and although shes not very old, we can see she won't last but a few more years. We know she was abused by her previous owners and I expect that has taken a toll on her. You have our love and condolences on the loss of such a lovely family pet.

Jeff- I'm so sorry to hear of the loss of your beloved family member. I know how you feel! We had to have Pumpkin (the orange tabby in my avatar) put to sleep this past March. We have another cat. They are the same age -12 (She is also in my avatar).

We so miss Pumpkin though! He was just the best! We still expect him to come to play or for some "lap time"!

We had to do that final act of love for him so that he would not suffer any more. It was so hard but we know he is better!

You did what you had to do- that final act of love for Rocky! You did the best thing for him!

You will always miss Rocky. We will always miss Pumpkin. You and I have those wonderful memories of a great pet though!
