Many of the newer machines automatically compensate for altitude up to about 8500'. Others must be manually adjusted.

What machine are you using?

M-series Plus machines manually compensate for altitude according to the setting: Low Med or High

Here's what I found:

Altitude Adjustment —

The REMstar and REMstar Plus models require manual altitude adjustment (1=<2500 feet, 2=2501-5000 feet, 3=5001-7500 feet).

The REMstar Pro, REMstar Auto, BiPAP Plus and BiPAP Auto models have automatic altitude adjustment.

I live in Colorado Springs. It is aprox. 6500'.

What is the purpose of adjusting the cpap machine for altitude. I just can't wrap my head around it.
thanks!

You only need to worry about it only if you move to a location with very different altitude.

Your machine is set to an absolute pressure (XXcm/H2O). Barometric pressure varies somewhat with weather and significantly with altitude. Barometric pressure will either add or subtract from the absolute pressure your machine provides to deliver a higher or lower effective pressure.

If your machine doesn't automatically react to barometric pressure, you should have it set for the highest compensation ("3" or "high", etc) in CO Sprgs. When you come to your senses and move to FL, you can lower the setting!
