cpap noise without humidifier

Post by Puffer » Sun Aug 29, 2010 6:29 pm

Hello

I am new here but I have been on cpap for about 3 years. I would really like to ask the forum community what their experiences are with removing the humidification units from the cpap and how it affects noise level.

I have a vantage autoset and use a full face mirage quattro and I notice a huge increase in mask noise when I remove the humidifier. I rarely if ever use the humidifier but find that I have to carry it with me when I travel to cut down on the mask noise. I would love to be able to find a machine/mask combo that does not have this problem, so your input would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

I have the PR S1 auto. I had to do a home titration that extended out for a full month. During the home titration, I used a machine borrowed from Kaiser and, because they don't want to have to clean the humidifier, I had NO humidifier. That was uncomfortable, to say the least.

I noticed a huge difference when I finally got my own machine (same model) with humidifier. It wasn't super noisy without the humidifier, but you could definitely hear it. Once the humidifier was added on, nearly dead silence.

The machine I used for titration was brand spanking new--I was the first user, so the blower hours were not a factor. Some people have complained that the noise of the machine increases with a certain number of blower hours, but I haven't noticed that either (100% compliance for about 5 months now).

I don't know about your machine, but for mine, having the humidifier definitely keeps the machine quieter.

Jankitz,
I have the same setup you do and I am finding that the noise seems to be getting louder each night. I started out with an CPAP that was not auto and there was no noise. When I changed to the auto CPAP about 6 weeks ago, the noise level was just a little louder but not much. Last night, the noise made with each of my breaths was so loud that it kept me up. I am using the humidifier set at 5. I am not sure it can go any higher. You mentioned "blower hours". Is that the number of hours I have used it in the last 6 weeks and does that mean the breathing noise will continue to increase?

Thanks for your help,
Linda

Blower hours would be total number of hours used - a way to figure the age of the machine. At least in this context. So yes it is the number of hours used in the last six weeks.

I do not think six weeks have aged the machine so that noise is an expected problem! so there's some other reason. Which I, sadly, know nothing about. There are other people who use the same machine and can tell you more . In the meantime, try searching the forum for 'vantage autoset noise' and see if anything useful comes up.
