OT : Heartburn Tip

Heartburn Tip: Try Chewing Gum
Magee suggests chewing gum after a meal to stimulate saliva production, since saliva neutralizes acid and spurs the stomach to move its contents into the small intestine faster -- basically, moving it down the line before heartburn sets in. Magee recommends picking a flavor that isn't peppermint or mint, in order to avoid relaxing the lower esophageal sphincter.

I haven't heard of that one before. I always drink milk, on the rare occasion that I have heartburn.

Heartburn and acid are usually caused by overeating or eating too close to bed time if you're getting heartburn at night. I must say I used to get it a lot prior to my CPAP years but have since cut down on what I eat and how much I eat prior to bedtime, however I do think CPAP also helps in reducing this a little.

Milk is used to be a good favourite of mine, but nothing helped more than those chewy chalky little tablets to help combat it, oh and making sure you don't overeat or eat too close to bedtime in the first place

Thanks
Dave

Milk isn't that good for it because even though it cools the burn temporarily, it causes the stomach to produce more acid.

Cinnamon gum works best for me-- I like the flavor and it tends to produce quite a bit of saliva.

Taking Betaine HCl tablets with one meal a day has helped me immensely! (thanks socknitster). That, and following the montignac diet (avoiding fats and simple carbs in the same meal). The latter is harder to do, but the former works just as well.

I agree that a major cause of heartburn, at least for me, is slow stomach but also slow intestinal transit.

Interesting idea with the gum. I also didn't realize mint relaxes the LES. How does one explain that peppermint capsules (which dissolve in the intestines) or drinking mint tea after eating helps with heartburn?

Mint is a big trigger for acid reflux. Avoid it.
