The noise is keeping me awake

Post by littlered » Wed Nov 02, 2005 6:27 am

My air pressure is set and 11 and when it's in full force the swoosh sound from my mask keeps me awake -- is there a mask out there that doesn't make noise?

Masks are specifically designed to do that, to make "white noise" like that to help you sleep. Ok, well, we can keep telling ourselves that, anyway...

I've used 3 masks total - all make noise to some degree. They have to vent air to keep what you're breathing "fresh" apparently. Of the ones I've tried, the Breeze has seemed to be quietest, certainly a bit quieter than the Activa - though I've not found either to be too noisy for me (or my wife).

I also find that when I first get into bed and don the mask, it seems much noisier. I believe that's because I'm breathing more forcefully. As I relax and breathe easier, the noise from the exhalation port drops.

Now, I have found that nasal masks are quieter than the nasal pillow ones, however, I use the Swift and the Aura. I don't remember when I had tried the Breeze if I found that one to be noisy, it was so long ago. But there is definitely noise to what you use, juding by your photo, which is the Swift.

Some people put a small piece of netting, or tulle, in the barrel to supposedly supress the noise a bit. I never found it to do anything. The noise, though, really doesn't bother me. Try to think of it as waves on the shoreline. I think of inahaltion as the wave rolling in and exhalation is quieter, so the wave is rolling back out. I find it a bit relaxing, actually.

Look, we tell ourselves whatever it takes to get us through it all. So, NO, I'm not crazy in real life ...

Both of the Fisher & Paykel masks I have tried were by far the quiestest of any I've used. The 405 and 407 are both virtually silent.

The Hans Rudolph is a quiet full face mask. This mask has 5 sizes plus different seals to customize the fit to cut down on leaks.

My Leagage on my ResMed AutoSpirit has been 0.00L/S for the last three days.

I am not using a seal of any sort on my mask.

There are some much noisier than others. The noisiest I tried was the Freestyle followed by the Mirage Vista. The Swift, Breeze, Aura and Comfort Curve are all relatively quiet. Like all things it really depends on how they are adjusted.

The other morning I decided to sleep in and I guess I was too quiet. It was the first time since I started this therapy my wife and to poke me and see if I was still breathing. All was functioning well but my Activa wasn't making a sound and had her concerned.

I have attached an "External Cpap Exhaust tone mudulation difribulator with flux capacitor" to my mask. It does not make the maske any quieter, but it does make you want to tap your toes...
