Under what circumstances would APAP be run in CPAP mode?

Post by yawnny » Thu Aug 19, 2010 12:44 pm

OK, I'm new to APAPs having gotten one just 2 days ago and am curious as to if there is some advantage to running the machine in CPAP mode after a certain length of time. My old CPAP was set to 13 and the new S9 autoset is set to 10-15. Over the past 2 days (I fully realize that 2 days not long enough for meaningful statistics) median pressure was 10.3, 95th percentile 11.4, and max was 12.7.

After a meaningful sample of data has been collected is there going to be an advantage to set the machine to whatever the max value or some other fixed value as opposed to staying in APAP or is it just a matter of personal preference?

There may or may not be any advantage to switching to cpap ever. I have not used straight cpap since I had my old machine which only ran in straight cpap ( 2 years ago).

Some run it in cpap mode because changing pressures disturb their sleep. I do not have that problem. I like a very narrow range in auto since it helps with gas pain for me.

Even those who prefer to run their machine in straight cpap like having the auto so that they can check a range of pressures once in awhile if it looks like they are having more events and may need a pressure change. It's like doing their own in home titration.

What was your AHI and leak?

AHI was 0.2 and leak was; median - 0.0, 95th percentile = 7.2, max = 19.2 with a FX nasal pillow. Does taking the mask off for a bathroom break influence the leakage score or is it compensated for by the software?

I tried my apap on cpap for an experiment, I couldnt handle it though, and wimped out..

Im happy with my range of pressures, and Im happy that Im not at full pressure ALL the time.

However, I have heard some people get bothered by the changing pressure, so they might like to run theirs on cpap sometimes.. but if you HAVE
the apap, you can adjust the pressure ranges as your needs change..

Not to mention it does this when you roll over, are more tired, whatever, its nice that it takes care of everything automatically..

I did discover its not the greatest idea to have it set between four and twenty for very long! Soon as you figure out where your sweet spot is,
hang your hat on a couple numbers below and above that..

I love my apap, but today, I was loaned an auto bipap just to take it for a test drive..
