Waking every day at 4:30 a.m.-sleep cycle question.

Post by grumpygirl » Wed Aug 18, 2010 5:16 pm

Good Evening All!! I have a question about sleep cycles. I have been waking up every morning lately at 4:30 a.m. like clock work(no pun intended)!! I am wondering if there is some part of the sleep cycle that ends or begins at that particular time. I can't help but think that something significant is happening at that time that is waking me. This has been going on now for quite some time and I am really feeling sleep deprived. It doesn't matter what time I go to bed-I will still wake up at that same time.
Anyone have any thoughts on this? I know it may sound like a dumb question but I am wondering if there is something I can do to stop this. Thanks for any help you guys can send my way- GG

i have done that when the weather changes...

my husband does it when he has to get up three times a month at that time, and he gets stuck on it.

if you got up at that time once during the week sometime in the past, you could have reset YOUR clock... it can happen that fast..

so hang in there, you should be able to reset I hope! Dont expose yourself to any light when you wake up at four thirty.. dont turn on
a light to look at the clock, and put a night light in the bathroom if you have to get up to go.. .. a bright light can shut down your melatonin and then
YOU ARE UP, and forget about trying to go back to sleep... even computer lights and things like that can PREVENT a good nights sleep..

good luck!

It is the time when most people go deeply into rem and as a result it is when people have apneas and also when patients "die quietly in their sleep" It is not called the graveyard shift for nothing.

If you have data and a way to see it you need to check your apneas.

Grumpygirl, while it could be sleep cycle related, it could just as easily be something else. I'm sensitive to environmental stimuli, and I once had a neighbor who rode his motorcycle to work every day, and woke me up with that bike every morning. I've also been bothered by the headlights from cars shining through the window. Look at EVERYTHING that might be bothering you.

I have the same problem but for me it's 5:30 a.m. Have been trying darkness, sedatives, you name it. Discovered that if I went to bed later; like 2 a.m. or 3 a.m. I would be able to sleep until 8:30 a.m. or so. So am thinking it might be something to do with the body saying 'enough sleep for tonight' rather than the internal clock. Dunno. Still getting up groggy and think I can do better in the energy department. Working on it and I think Im getting closer to the magic bullet thing. The mask is sealed well all night. Pressures are pretty much spot on now with perhaps one apnea and one hypopnea event but SaO2 still lower than desired which I feel might be causing me to awaken from REM and L4 sleep but not fully awaken.... and only an EEG sleep study is going to answer that riddle. Ive made an appt with the sleep doc. Boy is he going to be surprised when I bring in a binder of data for him to see. Hope he doesn't get ticked off and I think I want to try infusing 2L of O2 before my visit so that he can't yell at me for nothing.

I have the same problem re waking. You could try an eye mask to see if it will help.
TorontoCpapguy, please tell us how you make out re this with your Dr. Sometimes
I get back to sleep but often just cannot do so . Maybe it's an Ontario problem!!
