Update 2 from my first day...

Post by needsomezees » Tue Aug 17, 2010 6:02 pm

First night tonight!! Wish me patience, commitment and a little good luck!!!

-

Well - I woke up with my mask on, so that's a start! Did not have that "burst of energy" feeling that some experience, but I'm ok with that. I DID get up though without hitting snooze 10 times. I don't feel the same kind of tired as usual... instead, I feel like my brain is still in a deep sleep. I don't mind it at all. I think my brain is telling me, "please go back to bed and get some of that good oxygen-rich sleep I've been needing so bad"! Wish I could see some results this morning... again, I'm using the M-series APAP until the PR gets her next week. I am ordering the software for the PR, but obviously don't have the obnoxiously large card reader needed for the "M". Guess I can wait for the DME to read the card when I pick up my PR.

Wife confirms no snoring... got a little condensation on a humidity setting of 2. Does that mean I should try turning it up to 3? Do I need a heated hose cover with a heated humidifier? I think my headgear was a little tight as the Swift FX seemed to be digging into my nose a bit. I might try the small one tonight and see what happens. I will admit - I had a staring match with my machine this morning... trying to come to terms with the fact that we will be together forever. Perhaps I will name her Beyonce...

6:00 pm - well, my brain woke up around 11 this morning, and finally caught up to the rest of me, which by then I felt like I had been hit by a truck. Took a couple of Advil. By 2 I realized I was feeling pretty darn good and was being much more "mentally" productive at the office than usual! I am not exhausted, but getting tired. I am anxious to get to bed and try this thing again!!!

Thanks for the advice on the humidity. I was not dry, so I will knock it back to 1. I live in Louisiana where the humidity is about 432% anyways, so it makes sense to dial it back a notch.

For those requesting regular updates (there are few just a couple of days behind me) I will do my absolute best. I will generally update the "subject" but if it gets to be too much I will start a new thread. Also - please don't hesitate to PM me if you want additional details... I think I have said everything, but you may have questions that I haven't addressed. I don't know much, but I know about "my" DAY 1!!!

Thanks for the support everyone.
Patience, commitment and good luck to you!

To answer your questions:

1. Turning humidity up is likely to cause more condensation. If you don't feel particularly dried out you could try turning it down to 1. Putting the machine below the level of the bed will help too.

2. I would not buy a heated hose cover until you get your PR System 1 and try it out for a bit. It automatically adjusts for humidity (unlike the M Series) and so you may find you don't need a hose cover. (I've never had any condensation at the 3 setting).

3. There are lots of postings on tweaking the Swift FX mask to get it just right so you might want to do a search. Given your problem, I suggest making sure that the top strap is going over the top of your head (almost vertical) rather than the back of your head and then loosening the top strap so the pillows are barely touching your nose. turn the machine on so the pillows inflate and then tighten the top strap click by click until you get a seal. You want it to be as loose as possible.

As for names, it sounds like your brain feels less GaGa today, or maybe Divine Brown (of Hugh Grant fame).

That is a great idea to name your machine Beyonce!!!

put a ring on it!

you are going to be married for the rest of your life..

I have been going thru machines like ex husbands.. Im trying my fourth in five months tomorrow.

(just a phrase, I dont have any x's)

If I named my machine it would be.... mmmm... "Peanut" because I despise peanuts.. I loath them, and I hate my machine...

but I use it every single night! Resistance is futile!

excellent start
so lets look ar your questions humidity if you have some in the mask you will want to turn it down 1 or 1.5 see how that goes 3 is more
the FX does not need to be tight on the head , it should just sit under the nose as it will expand a little as your pressure comes up to full
it takes time and a little getting used to so keep up the good work and it will all come together

The PR S1 does a great job of controlling humidity to prevent rainout in the hose, BUT, it does not heat the water at all. That means the air flowing into the nasal pillows is icy COLD and when those pillows are against your warm, toasty nose, you get condensation in the pillows. Better living through science.

Condensation usually won't happen with the PR S1 with other types of masks that don't have direct contact with your nostrils.

I'm trying out some Swift FX and LT pillow covers made by padacheek and they seem to be helping. But the part of the pillow that actually touches my nostrils always feels a bit wet--gives me sympathy for my dog (who has the coldest, wettest nose ever--and knows how to use it!).

Hi,

That is pretty good for day 1. I lasted about 2 hours my first night, so you are way ahead of the game. Keeping the mask on is good. No snoring is great. Having periods of clarity is wonderful. Now, give your body about 10 days to get out of crisis mode, and about 90 days to get caught up, and you will feel like a new person.
