what is this about folding tongues on roofs of mouths?

Post by elena88 » Thu Aug 12, 2010 10:52 pm

I have read several posts about folding tongues on the roof of one's mouth, I suppose to help prevent it from sliding back causing
an obstruction?

Can someone explain this to me, or does folding the tongue help with something else?

I tried this, and then I tried to relax, and it still blocks my airway.. my tongue is so HUGE and my mouth is so tiny, if I were a dog, I would have
a great dane tongue.. I know my mouth is tiny for many reasons, but it seems like my tongue would be way too big for even someone with a ginormous
mouth.. I even tried folding it over to one side, and it still blocks my airway.. I have an itsy bitsy throat opening too..

When I look at my husband's mouth, his tongue rests nicely between his teeth, like has is a one story tongue, in a two story condo, and
mine is a three story tongue in a one story house.. there is just no room in there! Have you ever seen the movie the blob? Picture that..

Is there some condition that causes tongues to get bigger than they should be? (Bye the way, Im a super taster! )

So why does one fold their tongue? How long does it take to train yourself to do that?

Does it mess up your jaw or your teeth?

thanks!

elena

Yeah, it seems to me like it would cause more trouble than benefit. I can't imagine being able to stay like that all night. I have the same problem with my mouth, too. I think Gene Simmons is my real dad.

And oh hay, I'm a supertaster, too! I take almost no pleasure in that (my LPR makes enjoying my favorite foods completely impossible) but I do have a long list of foods and textures that I really, really dislike!

Oh we could be long lost children of gene simmons exploits!

I have just been informed that it is HOLDING not folding! OMG, Im such a twit!

You hold your tongue up to the roof of your mouth, and pretend your sucking on a lemon drop..

I have never sucked on one, so let me think.... cherry lifesaver, OKay!

Yes, I also mentioned that my mouth was like a clown car...

So you have LPR too? doc told me it would take a year to heal, year is up next month, so I can have a beer, and a tomatoe,
and some mint and chocolate soon! woo hoo..

I do! My year of healing was up in September 2004. In fact right now I am sitting awake because apparently one of my new trigger foods is my typical breakfast and lunch, yogurt (YOGURT. REALLY?!) and anytime I put on a mask, my throat feels like it's tightening and I can't breathe. Cue full-blown panic attacks. YAY. My ENT has no suggestions on how to cope with things when they are this bad. I might go to bed without CPAP tonight, right now crappy hypoxic sleep is sounding better than oxygenated panicky sleep.

I had never thought about it, but I also have a huge tongue. It seems it has gotten bigger lately... can a tongue gain weight? If so, mine needs a diet pronto.

When I was in my teens in the 1960's, my dad used to touch the end of his nose with his toungue. (This was before Gene Simmons and Kiss.) He also used to snore so loud that my mom slept on the couch most nights. I have no idea if those two things are related, but I"m absolutely certain he had Sleep Apnea by the time he was in his mld 30's.

Ever open your mouth under water? You can still hold your breath and do this because you can voluntarily close off your throat.

Putting my tongue on the roof of my mouth helps me kind of close off my throat (from my mouth). So when I have my nasal mask on, it's actually possible to slightly open my mouth without losing all the air. I can only do this for a second or so, but I think that the tongue position with sealed lips stops the blowfish effect and I don't have any mouth leakage all night.

If my tongue is flopping around, my mouth will fill with air and eventually blow out the lips.

There's a ridge behind your top teeth. The tip of your tongue should rest there on that ridge, not against your top teeth. It seems to me that even a big tongue could fit there.
