Does Using CPAP Cause Back Pain?

Post by i_am_jim » Sun Oct 30, 2005 5:14 am

I’ve been using my CPAP consistently for about a month. In another of my posts I explained that I was waking up about two hours earlier than normal. I just realized why. I’ve begun getting back pains that wake me.

The reason I’m writing this at 5am is because I woke up an hour and a half ago with my back so painful I couldn’t go back to sleep. The pain seems to be in most areas of my back from low to high. It’s aggravated by breathing but seems to be muscle pain, however I can’t be sure. Once I get up it seems to subside quickly.

Is this a phenomenon known to be associated with CPAP use?

Jim,

This means the cpap is probably working. You are sleeping so soundly that your are not moving as much as you were before. This can cause your back to get stiff.

Do you see a Chiropractor? I've seen a few... some quacks and one woman who can fix me up everytime... unfortunatly her office is now an hour away from me.

Hello, Jim
Do you usually sleep on your back? I am a stomach sleeper, and I thought when I first began my wonderful journey with cpap that I had to sleep on my back. I did have back pain when I slept on my back, but it gradually went away. Now, since I found out that I can sleep in any position, I move from side sleeping to stomach, and very rarely on my back.

Lori, thanks again for getting my pic on this site. You really did a great job. I look as if I am giving everyone a wave, so hi everyone.

No. I normally sleep on my side, but I've found the nose pads (and mask during the test period) work better if I sleep on my back. So I start out sleeping on my back with my upper body raised. (My head on the headboard and a pillow under my neck which also raises my upper chest.) Later in the night I slide down and lie on my side, but I've found my normal position restricts the flow through my nose. As a result I've learned to turn my face slightly up -- toward the ceiling.

However I've now realized my back hurts less the more erect (high on the headboard) I am -- on my back in a semi-sitting position.

That was me. I didn't realize it would let me post when not signed in.

My back problems have been going away over the last six months since I've been on CPAP therapy (some of which is probably due to weight loss). Additionally, a lot of my joint pain has been lessening since then.

Best wishes,

Den (Wulfman), what about the excessive hairyness??? Has cpap improved that any?

Wader,

I'm gonna "shave" after Halloween. I just thought I'd put this avatar up for a few days for the "holiday".

In REALITY, I haven't noticed that CPAP has helped re-grow the hair on TOP of my head. Oh, well......ya can't have everything.

Best wishes,

Den

I sleep almost exclusively on my side. Even if I try to sleep on my back, my body won’t let me drift off until I’m on my right side.

Like you, I found mornings as a painful period, so about five years ago I solved my backache in the morning problem with a sleep number bed. If you go that root, you’ll need to find your comfort pressure, but once you do it makes mornings a lot nicer. I no longer have morning backaches and if I don’t use too many pillows, I don’t have head and neck aches in the morning any longer either.

I was experiencing back pain after cpap use which was due to heart failure. I suggest you get checked out.
