Rx for Auto-Adjust doesn't cover non-auto machines?

Post by onesie » Thu Jul 22, 2010 8:34 am

Hi,

I've had an auto-adjusting bedside machine for years, but am taking a long trip and want a small travel machine. However, the one I want isn't auto-adjusting. So, I placed an order, but cpap dot com says they can't fill it since my prescription says "Auto" on it.

I understand that they have to follow policies, no problem there, but I am just curious about whether or not there's a strong medical justification for the auto feature?

(When I got my current machine, I remember the doctor saying that he'd add Auto to the script since most people found it more comfortable. I didn't get the impression it was medically necessary (for me anyway).)

Thanks!

When cpap.com dispenses a straight CPAP machine, they need a single pressure on the prescription to set the machine up. Like a brick and mortar DME, they are obligated to set up the machine for the patient. Auto prescriptions typically state a range of pressures, or they get shipped wide open. Without a single CPAP pressure, they can't dispense the CPAP.

Yep. That's the downside of having the word "Auto" or "APAP" on your prescription. With a generic CPAP prescription, they can sell an APAP because those machines can be set to a single pressure. But, if your prescription states or implies a range of pressures, a CPAP obviously can't be set that way.

If you can't get your doctor to write you an additional CPAP prescription, you could check out http://www.cpapauction.com/ for a less expensive Auto for travel purposes (and/or backup).

Folks are right about how the prescription is written.
What is your IPAP? This may tell us if a straight CPAP would be comfortable for you. Remember, the straight CPAP doesn't alter from inhale to exhale, unless it has a exhale pressure relief function.
Probably you already know this.

I thought we were talking APAP (automatic CPAP) not BiPap (Bilevel).

Thank you for the advice and info, everyone!

I don't suppose any insurance covers machines for travel purposes...

I wouldn't consider any XPAP as not being travel sized, unless you are handicapped, then anything is a burden. insurance only covers your primary machine not one of each flavor. a full sized machine will provide more options and longer life than a mini-machine. If you chose right you can even get full data. Jim

You're right- auto. I was just thinking about the range of pressures, but you got it right.
