CPAP MACHINES AND LARYNGITIS

LARYNGITIS AND CPAPS.....I SEE THERE ARE SOME QUESTIONS IN THIS FORUM REFERING TO CPAP MACHINES AND COLDS OR LARYNGITIS. I HAVE BEEN USING MY RESPIRONICS SLEEP EASY WITH HEATED HUMIDIFYER. RESPIRONICS OPTILIFE NOSE PAD AND HAVE SINCE BEEN GETTING ALL SORT OF PROBLEMS. I AM (OTHERWISE) A VERY HEALTHY PERSON, I DON'T TAKE ANY MEDICATION, EAT A WELL BALANCED DIET, DON'T DRINK OR SMOKE. I HAVE EXPERIENCED ALLERGY LIKE PROBLEMS AND WORSE OF ALL I GOT A VERY BAD LARYNGITIS 7 DAYS AGO. NO COLD, COUGH OR FEVER, JUST THIS HORRIBLE PAIN AND INFLAMATION (NO INFECTION).
ONE DOCTOR TOLD ME I MUST HAVE OPENED MY MOUTH DURING THE NIGHT AND THE BURST OF AIR HIT THE LARYNX FOR TOO LONG. DON'T SEE ANYTHING DEFINITE IN THIS SITES...FIND IT VERY PUZZLING. I,WE, SHOULD HAVE BEEN TOLD.

It's called "mouth leak" and you'll find ton's of info on this site. You doctor may be right.

If you're opening your mouth during cpap therapy you're not getting the necessary pressure built up - and not getting the right therapy.

You need to make sure your motuh is shut:
A chinstrap helps some
A full face mask or a Hybrid one helps others
And some tape their lips shut.

You'll find lots of discussion of each of those solutions on the forum.

If your humidifier's on a high setting, turn it down - many people develop symptoms as a result of too much humidity, but the opposite may also be a factor and only you can judge that.

Welcome Vivian,

Please stop using all caps in your post, it's considered "shouting" online and it's rude.

Your Laryngeal irritation could be the result of opening your mouth on a nasal mask or nasal pillow mask, but that degree of irritation is unusual--that's why you weren't "warned". Most people would have woken up or noticed the roar of air coming out of their mouths and tried to keep their mouth closed. That much air loss is uncomfortable in most cases.

It would help if you'd post your equipment so that we can see what might be causing or contributing to the problem and offer you some helpful suggestions. Plenty of people are willing to help, but we need to understand what the cause of the problem may be.

Click on the lightbulb in the masthead for the CPAP Wiki and you'll find lots of useful information.
