nasal odors

Post by Guest » Mon Jul 19, 2010 8:59 pm

My husband has horrible nasal odor and has been checked out thoroughly by the ENT and nothing was found to be wrong. could this odor be related to his sleep apnea/cpap machine? thank you!!!!!!!

is it what he claims to smell or what you also smell? there are other conditions which can cause perception of odors when no odor appears to others and some have reported acute sense of smell with starting cpap

If the ENT has ruled out his body (mouth, respiratory system, sinuses, digestive track, etc.) as the source of the odor, and you've ruled out his dirty socks and any dead mice under the bed, (no offense intended!) maybe the odor is coming from the machine and parts. Make sure that he cleans his water tank, hose, filter, mask parts regularly. It's easy to forget that little foam filter at the air intake, but it should be washed at least weekly and occasionally replaced. He should brush his teeth before bed time. He also might try using a neti pot to flush out his sinuses before bed time; it always leaves me feeling fresher.

I thought the air coming through my system was funky when I was first learning to use the CPAP. Pur-Sleep aromatherapy freshened the scent and helped me to adjust to wearing the contraption.

Do a google on "tonsil stones" and see if you think that might be the problem.

I came back and posted a link.

To Jules, this is definitely something I am smelling and he does not smell at all.

strange - are there other things you can smell and he can't?

don't get me wrong - I have things I detect my husband can't and part of it is real and part is probably neurological damage

You are sure you are smelling the odor from his nose? it does not come from his mouth?

(Not all ENT's are created equally )
second opinion might be in order..

What does it smell like? an infection, dead tissue, ???

Thanks, Joe50
I had those as a kid and nobody could tell me what they were.
Finally had my tonsils and adenoids out because of them(when I was 13 years old), but the doc said he had never seen anything like it.
I know I'm different but it's nice to know I'm not an alien.
Shar:)
I don't remember them causing odor but I spent many years trying to forget them!!!!
