Are there any advantages to using the SMART START other than not having to turn the machine off manually? It worked like it was suppose to on my s9. I didn't like it because when I first put on the mask I had to breath warm stale air for a few seconds. I would much rather use the manual button.

I am claustrophobic and I knew when I started the cpap experience it would be nose pillows or I was going to have big trouble.

The only thing I could suggest is set up her machine next to her favorite chair where ever she watches TV. Ask her to wear it as much as possible. She just might get liking it. Maybe.

Stale air is right !! Well -stated.

The advantage of SmartStart is that one does NOT have to press the Power button to either start or stop the unit. BUT ResMed (stupidly) eliminated the instant full on feature that was in the S8, so yes, you will feel smothered and/or stifled and/or phobic for 4 to 10 seconds. With SmartStart on, I remove my mask in the morning and the unit turns off in less than a second.

Because of the lack of instant full on with the S9, I have turned off SmartStart. ResMed Corporation tends to be very user responsive, so I have strongly requested to them that "full on to lower limit" be re-added to the S9 and made user selectable.

In the setting screen make sure nasal pillows are selcted instead of nasal or full face and that it is set to matches the type of tubing being used (standard vs slim) maybe this is set incorrectly?

Sheesh! I fail to see the problem w/just reaching over w/your eyes closed and shutting the S9 off!!!

But then I have never liked the SmartStart/SmartStop feature and have always turned that option off when possible. And for the record I have COPD and had 2L of 02 supplementation along w/my CPAP, my APAP and now my bi-level as well as w/o 02 supplementation on all 3 PAPs.

I've always wanted an on/off button at the end of the hose. With climateline they have a sensor there on the inside, it would have been sweet to have on on/off button on the outside at that point.
