Usually I go to bed around 11pm, but lately as had stressful work days, I've been getting tired around 9:30pm, so I've been getting myself off to bed and starting the nightly xPAP rituals before allowing my head to hit the sack. The heat is waking me up several times throughout the night which isn't good, but I started waking up around 5am instead of 6-6:30am.

This past week I've been getting more tired at 8pm and some nights I've gone off to bed just wacked, I then started waking up at 4am! Damn body clock!

Now I've started to try and go to bed around 10pm and trying to last out to 11pm to try and retrain my body clock to get back into the normal sleeping pattern. It's difficult because when you're really tired you want to sleep, but best thing to do is to get up, make a drink, find something else to do other than watch TV, anything to keep you awake (apart from caffeine of course!)

Thanks
Dave
Half of the family is in the UK and why most don't use a wee room air conditioner is beyond me. Don't even see them in the stores. Electricity is expensive I know and so is fuel. I just loved sleeping uner a huge duvet in the cold but I could never sleep in the heat. It would kill me. My parents in Toronto have a small, self contained, room air conditioner that vents the hot air through a port in the window that is hardly visible. The water that drips into a drip pan is evaporated normally; the old unit shut off and buzzed when the bucket was full and then you dumped it down the drain. And it cooled off a small room like an icebox. The ones that we see on sale in Canada are $399 CDN and if I am not mistaken they may operate on both voltages. Dunno for sure.

We have our house set for 69-70F at night and 74-75F during the day generally unless we are having company in which case we crank it down a few during the day for comfort in numbers. I'd rather have the cool than almost anything else.

Hi folks. This is a very interesting and useful thread. I go to sleep at midnight with little problem, but wake up between 5-6am. I wish I could blame it on aging, but at 32 I don't think that's the issue (!).

Any recommendations on quality blackout drapes?

I am beginning to think that this is a combination of factors; not the least of which is noise and light. The sun rises around that time and the birds start singing LOUDLY before the sun comes up; there are nests in the trees just outside our windows all around the home.

Not to be crass, but I find the my personal body functions have changed since being in hospital and are slowly returning to their normal timetable.... and it is around this time that I either get the call of nature, the sun starts coming up, there is noise somewhere, the wife starts flopping around in bed as she just had knee replacement surgery, or any combination of the above.

We are going out to look for blackout drapes that are fashionable this week. Perhaps a tip to Buffalo to pick up goodies at the post office in combination witha trip to the outlet malls is in order. Son is a whiz with the sewing machine and daughter works at Home Depot where we can pick up curtain rods for the windows and tie back accessories.

This has got to stop!

Good night all. I am off to bed again.

this may not be your problem but it was for me. I had a problem awaking at 3:35. I had a job where getting up a 3:00 was something I had to do before. All this many years before cpap was a part of my life. to fix my problem it was so simple. I turned the alarm clock around so I could not see the time. I was waking up and looking at the clock to I guess make sure I was waking up at the same time. once I turned the cock around so I could not see the time after a couple times of no time to check I was cured.
good luck, maybe this will help someone.

Streetrodder, my sister had the same solution, and it worked well for her also. I've recently started waking up 6 or so hours after I go to sleep (not bad in any case, and a definite improvement on previously, but still...)

This usually happens to be early in the morning, about 4-4.30am, and it is frustrating, as I'm early to bed normally. I need to implement this again, and stop checking the time myself.... It is a self-fulfilling prophecy perhaps

it is a pain not to be able to go back to sleep. I am one who just get's up before I get aggravated from tossing and turning if I can't fall back asleep pretty fast.

Well, played with the settings again last night and upped bottom end another cm so it's 11.8 - 15 out of curiousity as I was having hypopneas but zero apnea events. Last night I had zero apnea events and only one hypopnea event and slept 7 hours, waking at 5:30 a.m. I was up for an hour and went back to sleep for 1.5 hours of lousy sleep, tossing and turning. Still need to try and resolve the 5:30 a.m. thing if I can (hanging blackout drapes may be a big help I think); but overall, I think the only other thing I want to do is try these pressures for a week and then return to my 10.8 - 15 for a week to see if there is a difference or if I had an anomoly these past two nights, either way. Any way I look at it, the numbers last night are about as good as they get. I have awakened groggy though and am told that this is a matter of awakening at a certain sleep stage (?).

I think that once I have finalized the pressures and get the mask leakage thingy sorted out and as close to zero as I can (with the built in leakage,e tc. ) then I should be looking into another sleep study with EEG, EKG and the whole works in order to validate what I have come up with here. I don't believe that there is really any other way to validate the type and quality of sleep that I am getting aside from simply "how do I feel in the morning". I find that one or two bad nights of short or broken sleep for whatever reason will put me back at step one or step zero feeling lousy in general but that a few good nights of sleep with good numbers will put me back into the real world and feeling fairly well rested for the entire day, although I really do enjoy a nap in the afternoon or early evening. (But am wondering if this of itself busts up my sleep pattern).

Are we making progress yet?

I am going to try and get the graphs posted on this thread later today.

Before you buy those expensive black-out drapes, try a really nice soft sleep mask along with a white noise machine. I bought a two speed sleep mate white noise machine on- line and use it every night. Even took it on a cruise with me and to hotels when traveling. In addition I program the air conditioner to go off at a certain temperature but I set the fan to stay on all night so it is not clicking on and off. We air out our bedroom and cool it down before bed but sleep with the windows shut. I checked into duette pleaded black-out shades and found them to be very expensive. The sleep mask works great and you can take it with you everywhere. Good luck and happy SLEEP!
