OT A Sad Day For Tampa Bay

Post by OceanGoingGal » Tue Jun 29, 2010 4:45 am

This morning around 2:15 AM two Tampa Police Officers were shot. They were doing a routine traffic stop when one suspect opened fire on them. As of now one of the officers has passed on. The other is in critical condition in Tampa General Hospital not doing well.
A few prayers for these officers and their loved ones please.

Laura

According to the news, he has died and his relatives are proceeding with Organ donation. Hopefully something good (organ donation) can come from this tragedy.

As a matter of interest, Florida was one of the first states to adopt "shall issue" for concealed carry handgun permits. I sure hope the shooter was not carrying with a permit! Traffic stops and domestic calls are the two most dangerous events for a uniformed LEO. This is truly a tragic event for all of the good people of Florida. Remember to support your local police and give them a smile and a thank you now and then. And remember to support the second amendment rights of all Americans to keep and bear arms in defense of self and country. There are just too many whackos out there with access to handguns - and yet still FAR too many good folk who do not realize that they have the ultimate duty to protect themselves and their families as well as their country. And that means "shall issue" and I say kudos to Florida. If the whacko could shoot and kill two armed police officers just imagine what they could do to YOU and YOUR FAMILY?? I know firsthand - two years ago in Orlando, only a short distance from the home of Mickey, I had one of these whackos point a honkin' big revolver in my nose and if he wasn't as high as a kite I wouldn't be here to tell the tale. And if I had my permit at the time he would not be around to menace innocent folk and police officers. I just pray that this is not the guy that killed these two innocent and brave officers.

My most sincere and profound condolences to the families and friends of these two fine officers who put themselves in harms way to protect you and I and our families. Just a reminder that YOU need to be able to protect YOURSELF and your families with the best tools at hand. Not a nice thought these days but a fact nontheless.

One prays for a world without the craziness and malice to make things like this possible - in the absence of which one prays for the education of the populace that we all need to be prepared to put ourselves in harms way to help the good law enforcement officers everywhere keep the peace.

Both officers had family, the first officers wife was 9 months pregnant and gave birth shortly after he was killed. I can't begin to imagine the emotional burden she is under.

The perp is a repeat offender, passing thru the revolving door of justice allegedly having been arrested 42 times, put on probation at least 10 times and violated said probation numerous times.

I can only hope he meets the same fate as cop killer Angilo Freeland: When Polk county Sheriff Grady Judd was questioned about the number of shots fired at Freeland (68 bullets striking Freeland) he said "I suspect the only reason 110 rounds was all that was fired was that's all the ammunition they had," Judd said. "We were not going to take any chance of him shooting back."

I live in polk County. In the short amount of time I have been here I have come to admire Sheriff Grady Judd. He is dedicated to keeping the people of Polk County safe. Here is another quote from Sheriff Judd that made the news after the killing of an officer and his K9 companion Diogi
POLK COUNTY FLORIDA SHERIFF GRADY JUDD

An illegal alien in Polk County Florida who got pulled over in a routine
Traffic stop ended up ‘executing’ the deputy who stopped him.
The deputy was shot eight times, including once behind his right ear at
Close range. Another deputy was wounded and a police dog killed.
A state wide manhunt ensued.
The murderer was found hiding in a wooded area with his gun..
After he shot at them, SWAT team officers open fired and hit the guy 68 times.

Now here’s the kicker.
Naturally, the liberal media went nuts and asked why they shot the
Poor undocumented immigrant 68 times.
Sheriff Grady Judd told the Orlando Sentinel:
Talk about an all-time classic answer.
‘Because that’s all the ammunition we had.’

As of this morning the digusting piece of crap that killed those officers has not been arrested. The tireless and ongoing efforts of the TPD has so far not found this scum. Billboards everywhere are displaying his face. TPD has been checking out each and every viable lead. The reward has reached $100,000. He has been linked to other deaths in the Tampa area. I pray that he is captured soon.

It is a shame that innocent people have to suffer. I send my thoughts and prayers to the families of these brave young men!!

I know I will get flamed over this but ----- an eye for an eye. I think that sitting 20 years on death row while these "poor inmates" get their appeals is appalling, especially for those repeat offenders that show no remorse and no guilt over the blood that they have caused others to spill.

I am very aware that there are instance of innocent people that have been convicted for crimes that they did not commit -- but far too many are ones that have repeatedly thumbed their noses at society and will never be rehabilitated. For those, why should they get the luxury of living off from our tax dollars.

In ancient Palestine, offenses against one's honor were met with an escalating response. If someone stole one of your sheep, the manly thing to do was to go and kill five of his cows. If some careless bozo trampled a row of your corn with his ox-cart, you might go and set fire to his field. In other words, "teach 'em a lesson."

The eye-for-an-eye ethic put a lid on this escalating violence, insisting that punishment or restitution be proportional to the actual, demonstrable harm done, and that it not be determined by the rage of the party offended. For example, Leviticus 24:18 says, "And he that killeth a beast shall make it good; beast for beast." The eye-for-an-eye principle placed rational limits on retribution and punishment -- a true step of moral progress.

Now suppose a government enacts a law: "stealing a silver spoon shall be punished by 10 years in prison." You may recall from your grade-school history lessons that, in colonial America, this crime was punishable by death. The Judaeo-Christian tradition condemns such laws: its severity exceeds the "eye-for-an-eye" guideline. A silver spoon is simply not worth 10 years of any person's life. To enact such a law is to break a higher law that demands fairness and respect for human life.

GETTING PRACTICAL
But what about deterrence? Does the Judaeo-Christian tradition allow governments to threaten harshness in order to prevent crime? In a limited sense, yes. Deuteronomy 19, another of the "eye for an eye" passages in Scripture, says, "And those which remain shall hear, and fear, and shall henceforth commit no more any such evil among you." Governments may inspire fear by verbal threats of harshness; however, the actual punishment delivered to any individual must still abide by the "eye for an eye" limit.

The "eye for an eye" principle forbids us from visiting excessive severity upon an individual in order to `send a message' to the larger society. Primitive societies administered such symbolic punishments freely. The Romans "made examples" of criminals to deter crime -- hence their use of public crucifixion. The Judaeo-Christian tradition, however, takes the flesh-and-blood individual very, very seriously. Whenever a society treats a living person as an abstract symbol or as the embodiment of some larger generalized evil, Christianity cries foul.

What about the notion that `crime should not pay?' If a thief is caught stealing $100, shouldn't he do more than simply pay it back? Thievery presents no risk if there are no further consequences. The Scriptures affirm that crime should not pay and that recompense for malicious harm must not merely be on a one-for-one basis. (There's no contradiction here: the precise one-for-one payback of the "eye-for-en-eye" principle applies to personal duels and to non-malicious property damage.) Indeed, when Zaccheus came to Jesus in repentance, he promised to pay back those he had cheated by a ratio of 4-to-1; and Jesus clearly approved (Luke 19:8, 9).
On the other hand, a quick and simple rule of thumb is, "Either you eat the wolf or the wolf will eat you."

I hope the officers get the wolf quickly.

TAMPA - Dontae Morris, who is accused of killing two Tampa Police officers, turned himself in late Friday night.

Lieutenant Stephen Lee from the Tampa Police Department confirmed to ABC Action News that the 24-year-old gave himself up peacefully.

A private citizen helped initiate the surrender, officials said. Tampa Police spokeswoman Laura McElroy said the citizen, who was only identified as an associate of of Morris, arragned for Morris to surrender to him.

Officials would not identify who the person was, but said he was not a family member or an attorney.

The associate then brought Morris to a pre-determined location, where police were waiting to take him into custody. McElroy said the associate is eligible to collect the $100,000 reward that was issued for information leading to Morris' arrest.

Morris has now been charged with three counts of 1st-degree murder, for the killings of the two officers, as well as the murder of Derek Anderson, who was shot to death outside the Kenneth Court Apartments on May 18th. He was also charged with Possession of a Firearm.

All so very sad. My heart breaks when I hear stories like this. I know the pain of tragic loss. I wonder if there any safeguards in place to prevent the accused from profiting from their crime by way of a sympathizer being given the opportunity to get a cut of the reward in return for keeping the accused's prison commissary account replinished. Not saying that's the case here, just know I heard someone say not long ago that if they ever got in a position where a reward was offered on them, they'd want a loved one to get the money. Being "chosen" to get the money sure could make a person feel pressured.
