What's the best mask?

Post by ViarejoDelSol » Mon Jun 28, 2010 11:33 am

Hi,

I'm new to this; I got my ResMed S9 and ResMed Swift LT Nasal Pillow System a few weeks ago. I'm not really comfortable with my pillow system (I'm not too used to it, and I'm also wondering what will happen when my nose is blocked... I'm from Eastern Canada, where it's coooooold in the winter).

I've started looking at something to replace my Swift LT, but there are so many types of gears and so many models, that don't have the slightest idea of where to start to choose the best one. Am I better off with a nose maks, of a full face one? And what should I look for when I buy it?

Thanks in advance for your input!

I have not even received a mask yet but from all that I have read it really is a trial and error process to find the right mask.

Hi, if you PM me, I can give you more 'local' advice (in the Maritimes also and a long time 'papper').

The one thing I can tell you in choosing a mask is this:

(A) A survery of preferred masks would be helpful in choosing.

(B) A survery of preferred masks may not be at all helpful in choosing.

Still, I, for one, would love to see a survery of ALL masks and whom is using what and with what. From that information I would try out a variety of masks as I have discovered in speaking with many users that no two users seem to like the same mask to the same degree. So, a survey is going to be a help for sure, but in the end it is going to be trial and error over a period of time in order to find the mask and the size that is just right for yourself. It is unfortunate but true.

Now, if someone came out with THE ideal mask that would comfort to all faces and noses with minimal pressure? Winner! Or maybe not, cuz some folks need nose pillows, some need nosebags, some need full face masks, etc.

It is a challenge and likely to be your most exciting challenge in using CPAP and most difficult to resolve. I was lucky. I read and read and chose three to try out. Didn't like the nose pillows as every time I squished my nose they would come unadjusted or just plain cut off the air flow. Awake. The latter two are an Activa LT and a Mirage Softgel and I like them both although I still look for perfection.

Any suggestions out there?

I like the ResMed Quattro FFM. Having said that I cannot use it anymore as it puts too much pressure on the bridge of my nose. I use the Respironics FitLife Total Face Mask. 0.0 leaks most nights, comfortable, reasonable price. Sometimes you have to dig into your pocket, try the auction, to find a mask that suits. Or on some online sites you can buy insurance to return the mask within a month if it doesn't work.
Good Luck.
