Jack Hanna uses CPAP

Post by rested gal » Sun Jun 13, 2010 10:55 pm

Recently in the cpaptalk newsfeed thingy:

http://www.examiner.com/x-25789-Columbu ... leep-apnea

I thought it was interesting enough to post on the board in case people missed it. I had missed it until another cpaptalk member called it to my attention. It's so good to see a "celebrity" speak publicly and positively about getting tested for sleep apnea and about using CPAP.

If someone else had already posted it, I missed that too. In that case, here it is again!

I did miss it - thanks Laura! His openness about this is probably befuddling many of his followers who are thinking, "But he's not even fat..." Good for Jack!

Even the lean adventurer has donned the cpap mask.

Have a great summer Laura and all CPAP Talk members!

I'm still taking a good kicking from the OSA,forging onwards with hopes to conquer the poor sleep...

I've updated to a Liberty Hybrid(my 6th mask),seems to help a little,I now know why you like the hybrid,LinkC.

That mask isn't a great look for him, but its an important message that otherwise healthy people need to understand, apnea can affect anyone. We lived in Columbus when Jack became director of the zoo and put it on the map. He has always been a healthy weight, and fit. Thus dispensing of yet another stereotype (unlike my current avatar pic).

Doesn't he go into the field (camping) a lot? I wonder what sort of battery setup he has.

maybe its an old one, but Rosie O'Donald (spelling?) had a show on CPAP that is available on youtube talking about the benefit of CPAP as well too...

and last week on Mythbuster I watched an episode on making someone pee by putting their hands in water while they are sleeping... it was mentioned that Adam Savage has sleep apnea... would be interesting to know if he uses a xPAP too

Dear Rested Gal,

Thanks so much for posting this! I missed it also. Glad to see that Jack is taking his sleep apnea diagnosis seriously and using his cpap (unlike Regis).

Best regards,

Jersey Girl

The picture of Jack Hanna with giraffes reminded me of this... how little sleep giraffes need:

Wow, I must be a giraffe. After 3 years on cpap I still don't sleep more than 2 or 3 hours a night. I don't like it, but what can I do?

Just came across this post about Jack Hanna. What an inspiration for a celebrity to be so open about this. Someone also mentioned Rosie's segment when she was in The View which I have watched.

Interestingly, today, as I told a friend about my sleep study findings this week, she said.... "Why not seek other options like exercise and nutrition?" Oy! I tried to explain to her that while everyone can benefit from exercise and good nutrition, she was making a gross generalization that one cannot be fit and well-nourished and STILL have sleep apnea! Jack Hanna is an excellent example of a fit man who has this disorder.

Have you found that many folks have pre-conceived notions that this is an overweight issue? I know now that when this extreme fatigue first hit me, years ago, I was working out 3x a week at the gym, power walking 15 miles a week, and then...... POW...it was like I hit a brick wall and couldn't do it anymore. The weight came on quickly, which I am sure has exacerbated the problem, but it kinda brings up the analogy of the chicken or the egg.... Were you overweight before or after the apnea took its toll? OR are you another example of a fit, well-nourished cpaper?
Yes, that blue eyed beauty is my cat! He is a seal point, bi-color Ragdoll. I adopted him in '08 from folks who could no longer care for him. He is a joy and makes me smile each and every day.

From an older post of mine:
IMO, and some physicians opinion, the vast majority of obstructive sleep apnea cases are caused by an underdeveloped jaw which results in a narrow airway. The jaw may be narrow side-to-side or front-to-back. When the muscles in the tongue and soft palate relax during sleep, the narrow airway is blocked.

Symptoms of an underdeveloped jaw are crowded teeth possibly corrected by braces and extractions; wisdom teeth which had to be extracted; recessed chin; and a tongue which is scalloped on the sides where it is jammed against the teeth.

Why do we have underdeveloped jaws? It is the modern diet. In the old days, many foods required a lot of chewing in order to consume enough calories. During the developing years, the chewing put stress on the jaw skeletion which caused it to grow wide and deep. Today, with minimal chewing during the developing years, the jaw is left undersized.

Gaining weight, especially while eating well and exercising regularly, is often the result of untreated sleep apnea. It has been commonly believed that weight gain causes sleep apnea. I believe underdeveloped jaws cause sleep apnea and the damage to sleep and the hormone system causes weight gain. The weight gain can cause the apnea to worsen and worse apnea causes more weight gain - the so-called deadly circle.
Rooster
I have a vision that we will figure out an easy way to ensure that children develop wide, deep, healthy and attractive jaws and then obstructive sleep apnea becomes an obscure bit of history.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0ycw4uaX ... re=related
