making your own heated hose?

Post by gar729 » Sat Oct 22, 2005 10:17 am

Why couldn't we just make are own heated hoses with heat tape? This tape is used to keep pipes from freezing, but may possibly be used for our purposes.

or do a google search for heat tape

You possibly could, so long as you make sure the hose you are using can take the heat and not degrade from it.

OK, I went to the product site and saw this: "Heat to 500F". Just a little warm to breath, don't you think?

Keeping the temperature down low enough might be a problem with that product (how low can it go?). Also restricting the upper temp range for safety's sake could be an issue.

yeah 500 would be a bit much, but there is a heat control switch. Just a thought. There has to be something available, like electric blankets and heating pads.

I suspect there are many saftey issues involved. I would 'never' play with old electric blanket heating wire that requires full mains voltage.

A lot of careful design has to have gone into the heated hose. I am guessing that all up it would be cheaper to buy one.

You can buy hose with an embedded wire. They are used in industry to tranfer liquids that need to be kept at a specific temperature. I'm sure it would be easy to rig up exactly what the SleepZone people are doing. I'm not sure you could build one at a time for much of a savings though.

I'm actually going to experiment with Nichrome wire and an adjustable 12 volt supply. I think this should work. Similar to an automobile rear window defroster. You don't need very much heat to keep the tubing at or just above the temp of the air coming through.
