An Arousal is disturbance of your sleep, you may or may not know you are having them. Having less than 10 spontaneous arousals an hour is considered normal. Apnea/hypopnea Index (AHI) is the number of breathing disturbances you have per hour. Having an AHI of less than 5 is considered normal. Auto PAP units only know about AHI they do not count arousals. Having a lower AHI at the cost of having more arousals will not usually make you feel better. The goal of a cpap titration is to get your AHI AND Arousal index as low as possible.
