Hello everyone,
I am new to the sleep apnea community. I received my machine last week. The machine is a BiPAP autoSV advanced with smart card. I am having an issue with using the machine.
I am waking up in the morning with my stomach full of air. Are there any tricks to try and correct this? I hope to hear good news. Thanks!!
Eating Air??
Re: Eating Air??
What you're experiencing is called 'aerophagia' and is a common problem, especially with higher pressures. Here's a video with tips for you:

In my experience, the problem was somewhat alleviated over time.

Welcome to the Aerophagia of America Club, the club you never wanted to join! I'm told that the solutions to this problem can be found in:
- APAP/Bilevel
- lowering pressure, if possible
- lying on your left side
- lying on a wedge
- taking PPIs (protein pump inhibitors)--I feel compelled to say that I am just passing on this one, as there is absolutely no good reason that this should work
- not eating before bed (said as I stuff pretzels in my mouth...)

What type of mask are you using? Do you wake w/a dry mouth?
In my personal experience the most likely cause of the problem with a full face mask is that your jaw is dropping, your mouth opening and your swallowing air. W/a nasal cushion style mask the air escapes into the room, w/a full face there's no place for the air to go but down your throat or your airway.
Usually this also means that the pressure is set too high for your tolerance. It may be necessary to reduce your pressure to allow you to better acclimate to PAP therapy and then a gradual increase back to the pressure needed to provide the therapy needed.
Some have suggested a chin strap even w/a full face mask will alleviate the problem.
It is not a good idea to tolerate the aerophagia for long as in my personal opinion doing so tends to weaken the LES and allow or increase reflux.
