Sleep Disorders Set for Overhaul in DSM-5

Post by Joe50 » Wed Jun 02, 2010 8:44 am

Will it help or muddle it up even more?

NEW ORLEANS -- As psychiatrists work to bring the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Diseases (DSM) up to date, no category is likely to see more sweeping changes -- in nomenclature at least -- than sleep disorders.
No fewer than 10 new disorder names have been proposed to be included in the forthcoming DSM-5, the manual's fifth edition, while nine listed in the current version are slated for removal.
The reshuffling of symptoms and names may sound complicated but it should actually simplify the physician's job in managing patients with sleep problems, suggested Charles "Chip" Reynolds, III, MD, of the University of Pittsburgh, who chairs the work group handling this segment of the DSM revision.

Ohhhhh! The "shrinks" are actually "giving up" an excuse to label us "less than normal and well-balanced"???? They are so darn desperate for insurance payment parity w/the real medical profession I'm amazed they would give up any previous "Dx" except to break it down into 2 or more.
