Diagnosed but not yet treated

Post by Sleepy Eagle » Mon May 24, 2010 1:41 pm

Hi to everybody at the forum!!!

Wow I must say what a great blog! I have read more about sleep apnea in the past two days on this forum than was discussed personally with me by my drs!
I had my sleep study done on Good Friday and a week later had my "pressures" measured at home with a Resmed auto set s9. Since then I have been hanging not really knowing where to go next. All I have is my sleep study report from the neurologist and I know I need to get a machine.
Reading your forum since Friday, I got a number for Resmed and have set up an appointment to start looking at various machines. I'm inclined to go for the S9 autoset from Resmed with the humifier, the climateline hose with a soft gel nasal mask unless someone tells me that it would be a bad buy. It seems as though it has all the necessary features and data capabilities according to what I have read on the forum.
Is it just me or is this a very lonely road with very few people (including drs) that don't really know much about sleep apnea and the treatment thereof?
I must say that I still feel a little flabber-ghasted at the whole thing. I went in just to please my hubby because he was worried about my snoring and said it sounded totally abnormal to him. I really expected to have wasted medical insurance on "nothing" which turned out to be something quite severe and life-changing.
I'm NEVER sick. Always on the go even if I'm tired I just pushed-through. Is this a definite life-long condition or can it go away with time like diabetes 2 can get better with dieet and even disappear?
Thank-you for all the newbie posts, I'm digesting info as I go along. I guess I'm going to stick around here for sometime.

Hi - nice to meet you! "Is it just me or is this a very lonely road with very few people (including drs) that don't really know much about sleep apnea and the treatment thereof?" No, it's not just you - join the club! Well, unfortunately, OSA is a lifelong condition (short of your having gastric surgery - other kinds don't work, and weight loss very rarely does). It doesn't go away, with or without treatment (after all, Cpap is just keeping your airway open better than it's been, but does not radically change anything on a permanent basis), but with new technology coming out these days, you likely won't have to wear a mask forever. It does sound like you picked out a good machine, and if you're certain that you don't end up with an open mouth a lot of the time once you're asleep (your husband might be helpful there) then the mask could be fine too, though if you were to go with a FF mask off the bat, rather than realizing in time that you needed it anyway (happens to so many of us) then you could be a bit ahead of the game. Other than that, read all the links from the lightbulb and follow the threads - can't wait to hear how you do.

Hi there!

boy are you lucky you found out you have it!

I bet you are pretty anxious to get a new machine. I have that s9, and once you get it figured out, its pretty sweet.

Keep reading, youll learn soooooooooooooo much, you wont believe it..

Read the newbie would like to hear success stories too

Try to get your husband involved so you get through this together..

Did your doctor tell you that you would be on cpap the rest of your life? Mine did when she went over the sleep study with me, before the
at home autoset titration..

Hey, you got through that, so you are doing really well! This is a big project, so get ready!

Welcome, Sleepy Eagle. You have landed on a good site! Lots of helpful people to steer you through the beginnings of your therapy. I know it is a blow to the ego (since you said you have never been sick)...but it happens to the best of us. Once you make the mental adjustment I think you'll find this sleep apnea thing is manageable. Take care.

Hi to everybody!!

I'm so excited!!!!!!!
I got my machine today!! A brand new S9 Auto set CPAP, with humifier, climate line control, and softgel nasal mask.............Wow what a pretty penny this cost!!!! My healthcare only pays three hundred and fifty RAND in total. UNBELIEVABLE!!!!!
Well I'm set up and hoping that this will be the beginning of a new life, filled with happy, wakeful days, better moods, good memory and maybe some weight loss?
I went back to my sleep lab tech. for help. She was totally overwhelmed by the fact that I still didn't have a machine. She suggested that I go for the fixed CPAP S9 machine. I told her that I was VERY uncomfortable the week they loaned me the machine, but actually liked the first machine I was on to determine my pressures, the Auto CPAP S9. She was bright and got the data off both machines and analysed the results. It was amazing! She said that I had more Apneas on the fixed machine but a considerable amount less on the auto S9.
We decided that was the route to go. Phoned for about 5 quotes and got my machine!
I am really so happy that this part is over it was driving me nuts to choose a machine. Thank-you for all the friendly info. I really do appreciate it all. We'll it's off to bed with a skip and jump in my step. I will keep you all posted of my progress.
Happy nights.
