"Rain out" causes overtition?

Post by Big Daddy RRT,RPSGT » Mon May 24, 2010 6:49 am

I have an S9 with climate line. I was using the manual setting...the tubing set at 76 degress the humidifier set at 5 as sometimes I like more than the automatic 80% humidity. I hadn't had a rainout problem until the other night when the bedroom window was open and a cold breeze was blowing in. I woke up with water gurgling in my tube and my ears popping from an unusually high amount of pressure for me (18cmH2O).

Has anyone else had this problem with rain out causing overtitration?

Think of a glass of lemonade - if it's in the fridge, it'll acquire condensation on the glass, so your humidifier and certainly the hose would be 'wetter' than usual in the cold air.

YES, when I put my last machine, (pr systom one auto) on highest setting of humidity, pressure went up to 19.
(windows open always)

So much water in tube, when I undid it, poured all over the bed.

Perhaps the hose heater is unable to keep up with heat loss to the cold room air, thus air in the hose cools and water vapour condenses out as water.

If memory serves me (questionable sometimes ), more humidity means less pressure. so with rainout the xPAP increases pressure to compensate.

Muse-Inc, the concern is that the automatic function of the machine may mistake pressure fluctuation from burbling of water in the hose for breathing problems and respond by changing pressure.

Off the top, I suppose the user could set a maximum pressure the machine will go to (earlier machines can do that).

The user should check that the hose heater is actually working.

Yes... there are a couple of other threads with exactly the same issue.

If you use manual humidifier settings on the S9... it will do just what you ask... more than 80% and perhaps rainout.
The water in your hose will show as Flow restriction and pressure will increase to "remove the hypopnea happening in the hose.
Auto of course will prevent the problem or on manual... careful attention.

Here's one thread with link to a heated hose. viewtopic/t26373/Rainout-CondensationSolutions.html

WOW, this would explain so much! I believe all the times I had the humidity really cranked up I had pressures going up to 16, 17, 18, 19.. I have not
had any high pressures like that since I have been using the s9 on 3.5 humidity. The other high pressures were from when I used to turn my
system one aflex on setting six.. the rainforest setting.. I loved it, but I guess the machine thought I was dying!
