Am I just being a total germaphobe?

Post by Jaylee » Sat May 22, 2010 8:45 pm

I don't know how, but my Dad wore my mask to bed by accident. His dries on his chair, mine dries on my chair. Anyhow, I am a little squicked out about it. He is a smoker but not in the house but I wonder is it going to smell now? I am soaking it again as we speak. I am uncertain as to how gross mask sharing actually is, so I am asking here

Oh, he's your dad....your germs are his germs...his germs are your germs. In our house, we don't mind sharing family germs!

LOL Jaylee. You're not strange - a mask is such a personal item. I'd be squeamish about it too, but not enough to throw it away. Thank you for the occasion to go look up the term "squicked out". Learned something new today.

I washed it and it is drying now. I will have to use my backup for tonight though.

I wanted to add that I only woke him up about it because my mask is a lot bigger than his so I knew he would only get a ton of leaks anyhow I am not that heartless I grabbed his mask and was like "Why wont this fit?!"

I would feel icked-out too, and more so because he's a smoker. But soap and water should take care of it.

Can you mark your mask somehow, so it doesn't happen again. Or, put yours in your bedroom to dry after washing?

Nothing that a little cleansing wont handle. Its not like he was smoking when wearing the mask

Dont believe there are any health or other concerns here.

You could always take a little mouth wash and soak it in that to make it nice and minty fresh

Dear Jaylee,

Yeah, I would find it a little icky too. And I loved my dad very, very much. So, I would probably just give it a good washing in Ivory liquid dish detergent and hot water. In any case, he IS family and in the future, you will leave your mask in your room to dry. And, no, I don't think you are a germofobe. It's kind of like someone using the wrong toothbrush by accident.

I had thought about this when I found out my husband was getting his first cpap. I thought we might get our machines mixed up. But, he got an s9 (lucky!) and mine is an s8. We go away to our camper on weekends and so every week I pack up the machines, humidifiers, masks and hoses into our resmed carry bags and away we go.

He wears a Quatro FFM, and I use a Swift FX, so we won't be mixing up our masks.

In any case, give your mask a good washing and don't worry about it.

Love,

Jersey Girl

I got a laugh out of this because before I got my S9 I had an Escape with no EPR. My husband had the Escape II with EPR. He didn't need the EPR and I did so we swapped machine. He thought I was being completely nuts when I took his filter and hose out of his machine so that I could use my own.

ps: Jaylee, I'm glad you are still alive.

When I was still living with him, my STBX and I accidentally shared a toothbrush for at least a month before we realized it I was brushing my teeth one day and he walked in and was like "I thought the red one was mine?" And I was like "No, the red one is mine!" The yellow one was untouched
