can cpap diagnosis or use CAUSE depression?

Post by elena88 » Thu May 20, 2010 9:49 pm

Hi there..

I have read lots of articles about how cpap treatment can lift depression in apnea patients.. but has anyone heard of it

going the other way around????

Either the diagnosis or the treatment causing depression in an otherwise not depressed patient?

just wondering..

Maybe it can if you've been using it for three years with hardly any breakthrough results.

Hi Elena

I doubt that diagnosis or treatment can cause depression.

But I am pretty sure that the way we think about the diagnosis or the treatment can cause depression.

If we "awfulise" or "catastrophise" about the diagnosis or treatment, then depression is likely, together with a much less likely chance of effective treatment.

If we say "I can't stand this" - usually meaning wearing the mask - then again depression is possible, but regardless of depression there is much less chance of persevering with the treatment.

My own opinion is that virtually all failures to persevere with cpap treatment are due to the above, or similar statements.

The other way this can work is that we "demand" that treatment goes the way we think it should, and when it doesn't, that "demand" turns into anger and then depression.

This is pretty basic Rational-Emotive Therapy, but, I think, covers your question pretty well.
