How To Titrate an Oral Appliance at Home?

Post by So Well » Mon May 17, 2010 8:49 am

I have procured a custom-fitted device (MAD) that is fully adjustable. The intention is to use it for emergencies (no power, etc), overnight flights and infrequent naps. I may also use it for backsleeping which currently I cannot do because the machine runs the pressure up so high.

So far I took one 90-minute nap and it seemed to greatly reduce my apnea. I have it advanced about 4 mm and it is comfortable enough that additional advancement is possible.

If you are a patient that has titrated one for yourself at home, please give me advice on your technique.

Get yourself a continuous recording pulse oximeter. If your blood oxygen remains in the mid-90's or higher throughout the night, you are golden.

I can't answer your question but I will also get a MAD for most of the same reasons. I have an additional very important reason. CPAP will not control my apnea when I am sleeping on my back. A very healthy friend just had an unexpected emergency surgery and was in the hospital for 48 hours. He was forced to sleep on his back. I hope to titrate a MAD that could be used in case of a hospital stay.

I will never be "golden" , but I do have in mind to get an oximeter.

What do people think of this model: http://www.semedicalsupply.com/cms-50f.htm ?

I wonder how much the lithium batteries cost.

As a side benefit, I might want to try that one when running.

I like the price on this one better, but wonder if it would be comfortable and not come off while sleeping - http://www.semedicalsupply.com/cms-50e.htm

I have the 50E and like it. You know you have it on, but it's not uncomfortable. I use a velcro wrap around it, and my finger, to keep it on.

If you do a search for "oximeter" you find lots of discussions on various models.

Thank you. I found some very good thread on oximeters. No further need to respond in this thread.

Oximeters don't work very well when body is in motion (including running).

I have the 50-E and like it for what I use it for ... OSA treatment efficacy.
