Zest Nasal Mask - how to prevent leaks?????

Post by sleepy49 » Sun May 16, 2010 11:55 am

Hello!
What a great site! I have learned so much, but have a few issues still....

I started on CPAP a week ago. Started with a mirage Quattro full face mask - did not work at all for me, I developed a sore on the bridge of my nose in just 3 days of use. It also seemed to make me feel extremely claustrophobic. My awesome Specialist at Sleep Technologies fitted me with a Zest nasal mask - seemed much better at first. After two days I lay there feeling the air go over my nose ( the hose points above my nostrils) and the air seems to leak into my eyes. Only managed to keep it on for 4 hours last night.

Any advice on preventing leaks, or making a good seal? Are nasal pillows a better idea? I seem to be able to keep my mouth closed at night, but also haven't had a full fledged cold yet.

My pressure is set at 10, with a ramp- not sure of setting.

Thanks for any help at all.

Face and silicone have to be extremely clean and dry...
and you have to make sure that the silicone doesn't crease at the bridge...
If the hose goes over your head... the air will deflect from the exhaust into the eyes.
There are no secrets to the mask... its light and either fits or doesn't.
IMHO... great mask.

.

Are you sure you don't need the next size smaller mask? If it's a recent purchase, your DME should be able to exchange it for you. It's really difficult to determine fit unless you use it in your own bed for a few nights. Some DME's have DEMO's to take home; others will exchange it for size if it doesn't work.

I usually use size medium in masks, but I use a small in the Zest. It's highly individual, however.

I use the Zest mask and love it. My DME made the initial headgear adjustment, and I had major leak problems the first two nights. I loosened the head straps slightly and have had no problems since. The mask needs to sit lightly on your face. If it is too tight, it will leak. A light fit allows the silicone to inflate and create the seal.

Thanks for the tips. I will try and pay more attention to how the silicone looks, and not tighten it too much. I have the petite size, I'm pretty sure it is the smallest available. I have a great contact at my DME, she will exchange it for me if it still gives me trouble.
