Feeling Good, but tired!

Post by Janknitz » Sun May 09, 2010 12:26 pm

I'm about 3 months in to CPAP now. I have made peace with my machine and mask (for the most part) and I get good, quality sleep. I wake up a little earlier than usual during the week and on weekends and I'm ready to get up, not go back to sleep. This is different, because after struggling all night before, some of my "best" sleeping time was in the morning when I should have been getting up and getting moving. It was easy for me to "sleep in" on weekends like a teenager, now I can't sleep past 7:30 or so.

But, while I feel calm and I'm having some really good effects from CPAP (no reflux, no snoring, calmer, BP coming down, sleeping through the night most nights) I am really TIRED. I have almost a harder time staying awake in the evening when I like to watch TV, and I'm just as good at "chair napping" on weekend afternoons as I was before CPAP.

My numbers are good. My AHI's have been well below 1.0 consistently and I get about 7 to 7.5 hours on the machine each night. Some nights I just want to go to bed an hour or two earlier than usual because I'm tired (I used to stay awake into the wee hours of the morning, in order to try to outrun the 4 a.m. hot flash/panic attack which I now recognize was caused by SA).

I get an occasional burst of energy and sometimes in the evening after dinner I have enough energy to undertake a project instead of heading for the TV (which I almost always fall asleep in front of). I can even get through an entire television program sometimes. But I am perceiving myself as feeling more sleepy than I did BEFORE CPAP (and this may be just a perception because I'm more aware).

I have always been a "night person" since infancy. I typically got a burst of energy around 10 p.m. that could carry me for several hours before I could really sleep well. That burst seems to be gone. I don't miss it, other than I think I feel more tired than I should.

Any thoughts???

Hi there,
Glad some things have improved, sorry you are still sleepy..

I dont know why that happens.. I mentioned that to my doctor too..

I was very hyper before cpap all day and all night..

She said, if I had a lot of events close to the morning, some bad ones, my adrenalin
was really going to "get me going" (before cpap)

Im a hyper person anyway, so I think that extra shot really got me wired.. and I never had any caffeine, so that wasnt it.

Now that I am on apap, no more big adrenal surges.. so Im a pooped puppy..

Maybe it just takes awhile to get used to all this..

Also, they say congestion can make you tired.. someone, who knows more than I do
will be along!
