I take 2mg time-release or the normal 3mg ..... 12 hours before I want to wake up. (so usually means taking it 3-4 hours before bedtime). Normally they say to take it 30min-1hour before bed.
Sonata helps me too, no weird hungover feeling in the morning, but the half life is short and may not last you the whole night. (melatonin production is also less in the later hours of sleep). It's better than any of those standard sleeping pills, I've found. But I haven't tried Ambien.
You might want to try the pur-sleep scents from sleepguy (from pap-cap fame). I remember a while back a lot of people were saying that it helps them get to sleep and stay asleep. http://www.pur-sleep.com/products/produ ... category=3
I think if you need to stop arousals, the melatonin probably won't help. The sleeping pills, may help, on the other hand, perhaps they decrease brain activity or body activity? I don't know.
I'm sure your sleep will get better... don't underestimate the effects of the stress. During my recent job issues, I actually woke up spontaneously in the middle of a dream about exactly that issue.. .and I had been thinking about it right before bed. Our brains are busy with it all, so your stress is probably seeping into your sleep. Not to mention, cortisols levels might be high also causing wake-ups? (again, i'm not a doctor and just randomly spouting out medical terms ).

I use it every night, my doc says it is fine to use daily...
I found I don't need much.. I take a 1mg tablet and cut it in half....... that usually lets me drop right off. I take it about 30 minutes before going to bed.....

Re: Used Melatonin? Comments Please
I've taken 3 mg of Melatonin periodically over the past several years at bedtime when I have trouble going to sleep. It makes me sleepy within 20-30 minutes. The problems I find with it are I will often awaken after about 3 hours of sleep and cannot get back to sleep unless I take another 3 mg of Melatonin.
The other problem I've had with it is after a few weeks of use, if I decide to stop taking it, I have difficulty getting to sleep for several nights afterwards.
