Pulling mask off while sleeping
Re: Pulling mask off while sleeping
I have had sleep apnea for almost 4 years now. The first year I had it I slept with the mask on with no problems, other than the occasional air in stomach of the morning. But I felt good and rested and the mask stayed on fine, FOR A YEAR! Then all of a sudden I started taking it off while I'm asleep and have been doing so ever since. I have had maybe three nights where i've slept all night with my mask on in the past 2 years. I have tried every single mask available. Don't know what else to do, but I am so exhausted.

I did this a couple of times. Someone mentioned putting bobby pins to attach the headgear to your hair. It'll hurt when you pull it off!

Re: Pulling mask off while sleeping
Thank you Gerald if you are still around!!! I believe your advice helped me get through my first might of not taking the mask off. I had tried the tape, the chin straps, etc... but nothing worked. I was so happy to wake up refreshed with my mask still on. I was also amazed at how warm and comfortable the humidifier heater made the air. It was so comfortable I laid in bed for 20 minutes awake with the mask still on.Gerald wrote:Brobbi....
Here's a possible answer: I think it has to do with your sub-conscious....it isn't sold on the project yet.
Here's what I mean: I think we shift to a 2nd brain when we are asleep. This gives our primary (conscious) brain time to do "maintenance" and refresh itself. The sub-conscious takes over...to run our systems while we're asleep....run our dreams....and give us just enough awareness for protection while we're unconscious.
If you aren't totally sold on the idea of CPAP therapy.....if you aren't completely sold on its benefits....your sub-conscious will use that as its excuse to take off the mask and stop that "uncomfortable therapy" in the middle of the night. Your conscious mind is "offline" and has no memory of what's happened in the night.
The only way to get past this problem is to prove to yourself....absolutely and positively....that you need therapy. If you'll get yourself a recording oximeter and generate reports showing that you aren't getting enough O2 while you're asleep, you can convince your sub-conscious that you're gonna die if you don't succeed at keeping that mask on all night.
You've got to convince your sub-conscious brain...that your conscious brain "has it right" and that therapy is vital.

I was going on 2 months of middle of the night mask removal. My sub-conscious was rejecting the entire idea of the Bi-Pap. The O2 meter showed me that this sleep apnea was going to really wreck my health if I didn't change. While going to sleep, I began to recite the following mantra over and over in my head; I am getting such amazingly good air from my BiPAP and my body needs this good air
