Re: salt in humidifier for congestion
My cat has a nasty habit of trying to put her paw into the humidifier before I get it into the machine. I have a loft bed and I have to put it in the "staging area" while I climb into bed and can move it over to the other side and into the machine. I scream at her but as you know cats do their own thing. It grosses me out, I know where those paws have been and I don't care how much she washes them!
Cat - there is nothing special about the water in there - it is the same as what is in your bowl - go and drink out of that - or the toilet which you seem to prefer.

well actually for a long time I didn't even put water in mine but ......allen476 wrote:Sounds like experience talking. I wouldn't want to borrow your humidifier.....jules wrote: anything in the humidifier besides pure water - salt, cat urine, spiders, whatever ----- is BAD

no cat urine but I have had cats drink the water out of the measuring cup I use (I still my own so just take some out of that "fresh" and put it in the liquid cup which has a spout to pour into the tank) so I guess I am dealing with pre-cat urine also in my cup of distilled water - no paws in water yet but the other cat does do that with other water in the house
and others have mentioned spiders - none here

It merely gives a workable result, as do quite a few other approaches.

I get cat hair in my hose from time to time. Really nice having a cat hair blow up your nose at 1 am. And yes I turn on my machine and let it run for a minute before putting the mask on. It always is that one stray hair that won't dislodge right away that makes life miserable for a few minutes.

you guys are too funny
speaking of spiders, i remember the cockroach thread
I got nuttin' on cat urine... my cats tend to stay locked downstairs so they can't come upstairs. They do try to get up as often as they can though. Normally curiousity killed the cat. Well once they made it upstairs, and when I went to go chase them back down from my bedroom, they SPRINTED across the bed and back downstairs. Unfortunately my hose was still on the bed... when I went to bed later that night, the sweet sounds of air leaking from my hose ... so in my case curiosity killed the hose!

Never noticed the salty taste in the air when you are near the ocean. I am guessing some salt would be picked up. You might start with using standard saline solution and see how that works out?

That is fine water drops picked up by the wind off the wave tops, not evaporated water. I don't see many waves crashing in my humidifier.pb5927317 wrote:Never noticed the salty taste in the air when you are near the ocean. I am guessing some salt would be picked up. I thought that all decongestant nose sprays had the rebound effect though I have heard that mentioned with respect to Afrin often.Wulfman wrote:Be sure to stay away from Afrin. I looked up the main ingredients in the one I use - the primary ingredient is Dexamethasone. Apparently it's an anti-inflammatory. Its effects do not always last the whole night. I only use it as a last resort, if daily sinus rinses aren't helping (which they sometimes don't).
Afrin contains Oxymetazoline, a decongestant, according to the web.

Re: salt in humidifier for congestion
I understand that steroidal sprays need repeated/continued use to be effective not just one night shots - talk to your doctor about them - at least here in US you need an Rx to get a steroidal spray
Decadron (Dexamethasone) is an steroid that has been around a long time

Re: salt in humidifier for congestion
Interesting jules. I didn't realize that, and I didn't receive any instructions like that. The doctor did warn not to use it for more than a week or so
Yes, it's prescription, and I got it when I had a cold, to help relieve the congestion.
