I'm beginning to love my new best friend "Darth"

Post by CMorrison64 » Wed Mar 24, 2010 11:45 am

I can't even begin to tell you how much I did not want to have to have this. I failed my sleep study miserably, having 102 apneic episodes per hour, my ENT said it was the WORST sleep study he had ever seen; even when they put the CPAP on during the sleep study I was still averaging 25 episodes per hour. FUN for me.

So, once I was resigned to the fact this was now going to be part of my life ... I went and picked it up. The first night I managed 3-4 hours and kept waking up panicked with this "thing" on my face, 2nd night the same. Third night, less than an hour and off it came for the night ... fourth night, I said screw it and did not wear it. After that I had 1 7 hour night and 1 6 hour night and man did I feel fantastic. Since then it's been 4 hours for a couple of nights and the last 2 nights, I wake up about hour 4, take it off and then look at it and say to myself "Look dumb arse there's a REASON you need this" so I put it back on. I'm adjusting and I'm finding ways to sleep on my side.

I have a leak about once a night due to my positioning and if I move it corrects.

I am feeling SO much better, I don't fall asleep driving; I am alert and in a good mood at work. I feel better and plan on just getting better.

I was not wanting my husband to see me in it and hid it the first couple of nights and finally I let him see it and it's been good, he's been good and calls it darth. We laugh about it and contrary to my earlier worries it has not affected intimacy at all. I think now that he understands how bad my sleep study and my snoring / gasping was a real medical issue, he is glad first of all to have some peaceful sleep (I did spend 2 months in the guest room) and glad it's helping my health.

This board has been so invaluable; I've been lurking and now participating. THANK YOU!!!!

I also got over the panicked feeling by taking a xanax before bed; it's helping and now am not using it every night.

Welcome to the forum!!!!
It's great to hear things are working for you.....It only gets better!!!
I can't imagine sleeping without "my little buddy". Ha...I still have to wear earplugs to get any sleep as my wife snores like a buzz saw. Because she doesn't have peripheral problems - High Blood pressure, obesity, constantly tired, etc. the doc can't justify a sleep study. Snoring doesn't mean you have a problem, it's just one indicator, but still........

take care
cheers

Welcome. With your positive attitude things should keep improving. Remember at times you may slide back aways, but that too shall pass and before long you will be glad you can hose up. I can't sleep now with out my mask on.

Hi,

Doing CPAP is hard enough even without a relative or family member being on your case about it. Make sure you give your husband a gold star for being so supportive. Your numbers without the machine are scary bad, and it likely would shorten your life if you don't stick with this treatment. It is normal to have an adjustment time. Fortunately, you seem to be feeling better after the 6 and 7 hour nights. Getting a taste of feeling good like this so early is a great sign.

I finally gave in to wife, and failed sleep test.I call mine Ardvark, due to the mask I initally hated but getting used to it.
ANY BACKPACKERS ON THIS SITE?If so, what do you do about machine? I found this site, and have a new cpap comming, getting off rental service;ins ok with it. Been using m-series c-flex,getting new upgrade as m-series outdated model. I hated giving in to this, but when Wife saw results[She works in medical] She about freaked.

Snoreless 51,

I recommend that you start a new thread about backpacking. We have truckers, sailors, campers and motorcyclists, so I'm sure there are backpackers who can share their knowledge with you. I'm glad that your wife nagged you into doing something good for your health.
