Neti Pot

Post by pdean44 » Sun Mar 21, 2010 2:34 pm

I was curious how many people actually use the Netti pot. I seem to be prone to allergies and this time of the year some head colds. Last night I felt like for the first time in the three weeks that i couldn't breathe. It woke me up and i took the mask off. Got up blew my nose and went back to bed and slept for the rest of the night. I cant adjust humidity much without having rain out. Still waiting for that ausie hose to arrive. If you don't use the netti pot what do you do for your sinus health?

I have bad allergies and in all just bad nasal congestion. I have tried the Neti Pot with mixed results but none that have made me use it consistently. I use a saline nasal spray twice a day along with my allergy nasal spray with much better results for myself. I do know however that many people use the Neti with great success so I guess it is depends on the person. The Neti was actually recommended to me to try by my dental hygienist and she said that all of her family use it with great success.

My environmental allergies are pretty bad. Spring and fall are the worst times of year for me. I use my Neti Pot at least once a day during those two seasons, sometimes twice. It works well for me

I use a saline rinse with a squeeze bottle called "Nasopure". I got it online at http://www.nasopure.com. There are others like it available at pharmacies or online. I only use it when my sinuses are very congested. It works the same as a Netipot but I find it easier to use.

Every night, I put a few sprays of a product called "Simply Saline" that I purchase at my local pharmacy, into each nostril about an hour before bedtime.

Keeps everything clear for me along with a minimal heat setting (1or 2) on my cpap humidifier. I use pass over humidity during the warmer months but keep up the Simply Saline and the Nasopure when needed.

I can't quite wrap my mind around using the netti pot, but I found an aerosolized pure saline spray. The commercial brand, I think is called "Saline Mist" and CVS has a generic brand (which actually costs MORE) called "Nasal Mist".

This can be used just like a netti pot--you can tilt your head and spray in one nostril 'til it comes out the other, but I can't tolerate that (it just REALLY annoys me!). Instead, I give a short spray up my nose until I feel it on the back of my throat (like nose drops) and then I swallow. I usually blow my nose after spraying both nostrils and spray again if I need to.

This has worked very well for me. I've been without a humidifier (long story) for almost a month now, and I'm not having any nasal issues--in fact--my nose is clearer than it ever was before.

The only problem I have with the Nasal Mist is that sometimes the spray startles me and I pull the nozzle out of my nostril while it's still spraying--the spray hits me directly in the eye (but it's ph neutral and doesn't hurt!) or my glasses if I'm wearing them.

My husband has terrible allergies and is starting to get sinus infections a lot more in recent years. He just started using the neti-pot in February (every day) and he says that his sinuses are the clearest he remembers them ever being.

I used the neti pot before cpap. Now I just use Flonase every night. I have not had a sinus infection in over 3 years.

I do not use the NetiPot, but I do use the nasal rinse made by the same company. I'll be interested in seeing the results, considering that I haven't been totally compliant, and I've just recently been using it again!

I do use it sometimes, but not sure whether I should or not. I believe Dr. Park has written that studies have shown that upon discontinuing it, people's sinus infections DECREASED (hope I'm quoting that correctly). My ENT just told me it can push bacteria into the sinuses and cause more infections, although I'm not sure how that would happen if you lean forward as directed.

I have the most horrible sinus problems you can imagine. I found the trick with cpap treatment and sinus is to keep your sinus moist all the time. Not just at bed time. I use ocean spray, the generic brand made from walgreens it is not the same.

I use it as often as I need it during the day to keep sinus moist. At night I use netti pot or just spray ocean again.
I live in Houston, TX and work in Denver Co so you can see it is not a good combination for anyone suffering with sinus. When at Houston my sinus become better but when I go back to Denver the problem starts. CPAP is not helping either, but if you see the sinus problem is because there is mucus that is kept in your sinus until get infected or you cannot drain more, so a moist sinus makes a lot of sense. Your sinus drains so is gets healthy.

At least works for me.

That's one of the reasons I'm uncomfortable using the saline as you would a netti pot. My husband has sinus issues and faithfully did the sinus irrigations at his doctor's recommendation until he blew bacteria into the eustacion tubes and ended up with the world's worst bilateral ear infections. He was nearly screaming with the pain and I almost had to take him to the ER because nothing would stop the pain he had. It was horrible.

He now uses a steroid nasal spray and still gets one or two sinus infections every year, but nothing like that since he stopped irrigating.

I don't have allegies or recurring sinus problems...but when the humidity is down I often hardened mucus WAY up in my nose from using CPAP. I use the neti-pot (booger flush) to soften and remove those. Only when necessary...maybe once a week during the winter when the furnace dries out the inside air.

it gave me the willies the first couple of times, but you get used to it. (Keep your head DOWN or you'll get a mouthful of salt water...and God knows what else!)

I have used a Neti Pot for about 15 years and it works well. It's the only thing that really gives me relief when I have nasal challenges. Once you get past the weird feeling of using one for the first time, it's no big deal at all.
