OT -- Fire Drill!

Post by LinkC » Tue Mar 16, 2010 11:06 am

Just got word that my inquisitive 5 y-o granddaughter pulled the fire alarm at her school just "to see what would happen".

She'll be taking tomorrow off...by principal's decree. Her Grandmother's reaction: "Darn, she almost made it thru Kindergarten without getting suspended!"

That's my girl! Takes after Grandpa!!!

OMG, LinkC, that is too funny. Probably gave her a good scare, too. Those things are loud!

Commendable curiosity. And my understanding is her school administrators already have next year's high-spirited classmates picked out for her.

Oddly, her parents don't see the humor in it. (Having raised the male one, I see it as chickens coming home to roost...)

In the interests of maintaining the long tradition of this board in the art of one-upmanship, I would like to mention the time that my nephew pulled the fire alarm at a community center during a wedding reception.

He was not yet two years old.

My mother (his grandmother) was standing with her back to the wall talking to someone and holding my nephew in her arms when he reached around her shoulder and pulled the alarm.

He's been the life of the party ever since.

I like your story better though, because making a kid stay home from school for that is hilarious. That's a great way to add to the temptation to do it again!

A scientist or engineer in the making!

If you want to be really shocked, then realize that if your granddaughter manages to make it through her schooling, she may get to play with some REALLY big toys!

Trust me, I understand. People actually turn me loose in those computer rooms!

JohnBFisher,

What's with your new avatar? Although it is nice, I miss seeing your face!

Just reminding myself that we are not alone in this journey. I've been fighting some bad sleep recently - and am trying to get a handle on the reasons. So, the new avatar seemed appropriate. I figured I would provide a parade of different thoughts through my signature line and avatar to try to remind myself about what's important in my own life.

But no doubt my mug shot will be back before you know it ... to haunt the dreams of CPAPtalk members everywhere.

Cheers!

Oh, she won't be staying home (for that very reason!). She normally goes to daycare before and after school. She'll be in daycare all day with the 4-YEAR-OLDS! A fate worse than death for a kindergartener!

We were always taught that false alarms were a bad idea really.
The reason being if the fire department responded during a busy period and there was real fire at another school, a delay in response could mean those those children could be in danger or killed.

So not funny really, stupid.

Good point IMHO, Uncle_Bob.

I'll change mine to a chuckle of relief... and acknowledgment that all is well that ends well.

I believe the child in question was 5 years old. It wouldn't have been funny if she had been an older child or one who had ever been told not to touch the fire alarm. This should have been a lesson for the teachers, as well as the students.

So what is age limit at which it becomes not funny then, 7 ? 10? I know little kids do silly things, OK everyone got a lesson but i fail to see how its funny let alone an age range on when is can be considered so. Any decent parent or role model should not be considering this a funny event IMO. Clearly the principle agrees.

Like I said i find it a serious issue risking the resources of any emergency response. Also consider the panic and emotion that would have developed amongst the firefighters when they got a alarm from a school. Laugh if you want but i think its sad if you do.

I apologize, Uncle Bob.

I admit that I only laugh at things that aren't really funny. (Heck, I even laugh at OSA, and people DIE from that every day. Shame on me!)

I still love my nephew, though, if that's OK.

My mother learned not to stand too close to walls her back is turned toward when she holds babies. That's an important lesson, I think.

Safety first.
