Consistent AHI

Post by SnoresLikeWalrus » Sat Mar 06, 2010 2:27 pm

Hi everyone! On the Swift FX I have been having a consistent AHI day after day of 2.1 (two weeks now) with 0 leaks and 7 hours on the hose per night. No snoring. Mouth is staying closed.

I am thinking I should be very happy with this. My sleep study indicated very few actual apneas, so although I can't tell from the machine, an AHI of 2.1 sounds like a good result and I am thinking I should relax and keep going with the mask and pressure (6) I am currently using.

Too optimistic? or does my thinking on this sound ok?

I am just a newbie, so I am NOT speaking from experience, but that sounds terrific to me!! I have only been using my machine for about a month now and have just gotten my mask/settings together and gotten good numbers for the past couple of nights. If/when I get to a couple of weeks, I will definitely be feeling optimistic!

Way to go!
Melissa

Yes, you should feel very good about those results. Congratulations!

Most people would be happy with an AHI of 2.1 and in general an AHI under 5 would be considered acceptable by many. If you wish to get your AHI lower you will probably have to monitor your results (using a smartcard reader and software) as you try different pressures. As always, make small changes (say change pressure up or down only by 1 or 2) and check results for at least a week before making any conclusions. Good luck.

Sounds like you're doing great but the question now is how you're feeling? If you're feeling more rested and seeing other improvements then you're probably doing OK, if not you might have to do some tweaking.

Thanks for the words of encouragement.

I think I am seeing "activity" and "behavioral" improvement.

One night with the snow storms recently we were having power fluctuations so I didn't use the machine (for that one night) and I woke up the next day feeling like I was suffocating (and my apnea is mild, although my snoring is a 4 out of 4). So I certainly notice the difference without it.

I only need 7 to 8 hours of sleep now instead of 10 or more.

I don't nap anymore. I am not tired during the day.

I am doing more around the house and I started taking a yoga class. I still feel some brain fog, but not as much as before.

So while I don't feel amazing "instant" changes (my lowest oxygen saturation was 86% during the sleep study), I do feel positive changes gradually happening. My AHI went down from 4.6 to 2.1 with the new mask and is staying consistently at 2.1, so I think maybe I got lucky and hit the sweet spot!

I don't want to sleep without the mask because, like I said, I feel like I am not getting enough air!

My issue is anatomical: I have a small lower jaw, a BIG tongue (the doctor said "boy, that's one big tongue you have in there!"), and a small air passage. I think I have had this issue for decades.

Very happy to have treatment available and to have this board to get info and share experiences.
