Congested

Post by QRose » Wed Mar 03, 2010 2:50 pm

This is kind of gross. I get congested a lot and have been trying various nose sprays, etc. I use Astepro for allergies and another prescription nose spray for the congestion. Over the past few months when I have used my CPAP I have been waking up with a lot of mucus in my mouth. This is something new that popped up. I wasn't having this problem six months ago. Waking up like that is awful and feels terrible. I feel very tired during the day. It doesn't seem to make a difference if I use the humidity control on my machine. When I go without the machine entirely and sleep in a recliner chair, I seem to do better. I often sleep in the recliner chair because my back was having problems and it gets sore when I sleep in my bed. (Maybe a new mattress is in order, but the one I have is not that old.) My husband has observed me snoring when I have my Cpap on.

I also have lost 60 lbs since July 2009. I'm still overweight but not as much and I have definitely thinned out a lot around my face and neck. I thought maybe I wouldn't need the CPAP anymore but my lung doctor seems to think I should still use it. I asked if I needed to change the settings and he said to give it another six months. My setting on my machine starts at 4 and ramps up to a high of 15. I was hoping he'd have me retested given that I've lost so much weight but he wants to wait.

I'm wondering if anyone else has this problem of waking up with mucus in your mouth. I just don't understand why it's happening after having been on CPAP for 18 months.

Thanks.

Dear QRose,

I don't know if your congestion has anything to do with cpap or not, but have you considered taking Musinex?

Best regards,

Jersey Girl

Jersey Girl,

I have taken Mucinex on and off for years. A new family doctor I went to recently didn't seem to think it was very good so I haven't taken it in a while. Maybe it's time to start it up again and see if it helps. Glad you asked about it. I will give it a try. Thank you!
