Replacement for a broken CPAP

Post by ChicagoGlen » Mon Feb 22, 2010 8:10 am

What is the process for getting a replacement CPAP. I killed my Remstar Plus with water (E-14 Code) and now do not know the process for getting a replacement. I am under the assumption that these are perscription machines. I received my original 8 years ago. What hoops do I have to jump through to get a new one ASAP. Three day's without it and I fell the difference already.

Thanks for any help with this.

Hi ChicagoGlen,
Welcome to the group. If you could do us a huge favor, could you go to your profile, under the user control panel at the top of the page, there you can put in the information on what type of machine you use, mask, humidifier, etc. Thanks, it makes a huge difference in us being able to help answer any of questions.
I would suspect that contacting your insurance first would be the best place to start. If you've had your machine for the full 8 years, they may replace it with a new one. Generally most insurance's will replace a machine anywhere from 3 to 5 years. But, I think that's where I would start. That way you can get back on your therapy quicker, and start to feel better again. Hope this helps.

And you may be able to get a temporary replacement for right now from a local DME if you call around.

If 8 years ago was your most recent in-lab titration PSG you may well have to go thru another in-lab PSG before your insurance will buy a new one. But I can't imagine that a local DME provider (where have you been getting your masks and accessories) won't loan or rent you a replacment CPAP in the interim. This might be a good time to also ask your insurance company what local DME CPAP providers they are contracted with and shop around to find one you like really well that seems very helpful - and knowledgeable. This time around, for the fun of it, I would insist on a fully data capable CPAP and wouldn't settle for anything less. Heck, see what brand and model your local provider options prefer to provide and WHY.

Hey Glen...If Money or Insurance are a problem, you could try Craigslist. I just looked at Clicago CG and there are 8-10 CPAP's available .
