Will do fadedgirl. Thanks a lot. I've been tossed into flux. I'm beginning to lean towards the PR1 side now.

I'm easily lead... if you couldn't already tell.

I've not had an APAP, just CPAP, but have had both Resmed S8 and Respironics CPAP machines. I would go with the Resmed just for the larger humidifier...

I found that really surprising. I don't know that if I were to actually hit it with something that it would do any damage to it, but its still a pain to have sticking out of the side of the unit. I have a lot of stuff on my nightstand, I really didn't like having to maneuver around that.

This is purely subjective as well: the S8 looks like a toy or something, whereas the PRS1 is grey and very subtle on my nightstand. There is no NOT noticing the S8. And the PRS1 is like a little box, with flat sides and a flat top (except for the round knob). So I can actually set little stuff, or even a mask, on top of it. The S8 is tapered/curved, so that is not possible. Minor things, definitely, but I thought I'd throw it out there.

You get a warranty on the PRS1. I have no idea how likely it is that you'd need it (perhaps some other members will chime in on that), but that is something to consider. To me the unit seems very solid and well made, but so did the S8. AND if you buy from the private seller that you do not know you are going to have zero recourse should it not be as described (unless you go through PayPal or something?). If you buy from a store using a credit card, you have recourse if you don't end up getting what you paid for.

Decisions decisions! Let us know what you do and how it goes.
Hi fadedgirl,

The datacard in an S8 doesn't need to be left in - the machine records all data internally & when a card is inserted it writes to it. You can remove it, put it back in next day & it brings the card up to date.

So it doesn't really matter if the card slides all the way in (like the Respironics) or half way in like the Resmed S8s..

Cheers

Ah ha! I was more than surprised that they had designed it that way, so its good to know that they didn't! Thanks DSM!

hamletsdemise: give it some time, I'm sure others will post. Also, you can search the archives, I believe these two machines have been compared more than once.

Great information. Thanks guys. Very much appreciated. Can anyone speak to the importance or effect of a specific algorithim when using cpap or apap machines?

And anyone else care to weigh in? This is all very helpful.

I would say the choice might be made on which algorithm would best suit you. I have an Autoset II, which I find very comfortable and natural for me. However, I have a higher pressure (14.6-17) and above 10 cm the A10 algorithm will only raise pressure if preceded by snores or flow limitation. For me, my apneas usually are just the snap shut kind with neither snores or FLs, so I have to keep the minimum pressure at a place where it prevents most apneas. Most people do have snores or flow limitations from what I understand, so I'm a bit of a freak.

The new S9 does address apneas above 10 cm now but waits until after the apnea resolves to raise the pressure.

The algorithm on the Respironics handles obstructive apneas at any pressure I believe. (What is the Respironics algorithm called anyway?)

To be very honest, this issue of one brand's algorithm vs another gets so intense & emotional that few old timers will buy in to it any more.
It really turns into a brand vs brand bias argument. One problem on this topic is that there are distortions in meaning that get exploited in
the debate & that is what usually triggers a downward spiral.

Both machines have been doing a pretty good job for a loooong time.
