Upper back pain and muscle aches from sleeping on back

Post by grumpygirl » Mon Feb 15, 2010 7:59 am

Hi All- Just wondered if anyone had any suggestions as to how I can sleep on my back all night(using cpap of course) and avoid all the upper back strain and neck problems I have been experiencing. I use a wedge pillow along with a contour pillow under my head and I use a few pillows under my knees. Lately it seems that no matter what I do I will wake up with my upper/mid back feeling VERY stiff and sore and sometimes my neck will hurt too-which causes me to have a headache all day. I can't sleep on my side because I get TOO much aerophagia and I have bursitis in my shoulders. Any suggestions??
I can't afford a chiropractor since I just got laid off for the second time in a year!! I know this is probably a dumb post but I just thought maybe some one else had experienced similar problems. GG

maybe elevate head of bed- use a very soft foam mattress?

we have head of bed up 4 inches- and use a memory foam mattress topper- I know that it is the best for us-
we stay at hotels that have pillow top mattress only- but still like our home bed much better!

sorry to hear of your problem-- Packer

How high is your wedge, and where on your back does it start to elevate? Could it be that the wedge is rounding your spine? How high is your contour pillow, and does that round your neck? It may be, that with the wedge, all you need is a little neck support.

I have tried all kinds of pillows, and find I have to constantly adjust them to get the best support for my spine and neck.

Also, could any of your day-time activities, such as alot of computer or desk work, be causing your upper back/neck pain?

Thanks everyone!! I do think that I am rounding my shoulders during the day and most possibly at night too. I think I should try to use the wedge pillow with maybe a towel rolled up under my neck. There are so many issues that can cause these kinds of problems-things we don't even realize we are doing. I would love to raise just the head of my bed a little but I have a very heavy bed and don't think I could get anything under the legs of the headboard to raise it up 4". What could I use to raise just the mattress?? Wouldn't that ruin the shape of the mattress over time?? I too have a pillow top mattress with a foam topper that I purchased from Walmart. It isn't much of a topper but with using the wedge pillow I don't even feel the effects of the topper at all. I wish I didn't have to use the wedge because I do think that may be one of the major factors here causing the back problems-but it also helps with the horrible GERD I sometimes suffer.
I think the wedge pillow is causing my back to round along with the contour pillow -it probably juts my head up and forward without me even realizing it.
One more problem to solve. It seems like I am ALWAYS trying to find a way to get some "real" sleep, adjusting this thing and that thing in search of the ultimate sleep position that results in me finally feeling rested. AH !!!
Would love any more comments you guys might have. I'm open to anything these days!!!! THANKS-GG

Just a comment from my own experiences using XPAP for about 22 years. I just sleep on my side and rotate the hose swivel so the hose goes toward the top of my head. I sleep better on my side anyway, and actually find that sleeping on my back requires extra effort.

Hi, I'm curious as to why you feel the need to sleep on your back (the worst position for apnea production) when you're not even comfortable that way. Did I miss something you said somewhere ?
