Study finds reduced brain gray matter concentration in patients with severe obstructive sleep apnea

February 1, 2010 A study in the Feb. 1 issue of the journal SLEEP found gray matter concentration deficits in multiple brain areas of people with severe obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). The study suggests that the memory impairment, cardiovascular disturbances, executive dysfunctions, and dysregulation of autonomic and respiratory control frequently observed in OSA patients may be related to morphological changes in brain structure.
....
"Poor sleep quality and progressive brain damage induced by OSA could be responsible for poor memory, emotional problems, decreased cognitive functioning and increased cardiovascular disturbances," said Hong. "The use of continuous positive airway pressure - CPAP - therapy could stop further progression of brain damage in patients with severe OSA."

Just another reason to ensure ya take all the supplements shown to help the brain heal, reduce the inflammation that undermines the health of brain cells, and get blood pressure numbers into the normal range. Relatively recent research shows that we all make new brain cells all the time, that we all make new cell-to-cell pathways all the time...that needs all the help we can provide. I have been pleased with the improvements I continue to see in my brain function; the better I sleep (via the APAP), the better the recovery/improvments.

Thanks Rooster. That's a good information to send to the ones who are still dreaming they will live long without treatment. I send it to a friend, I hope that will help him to take his life on hand.

Muse-Inc do you have any supplement for the brain to recomend?
I have been taking Omega-3, Phosphatidylserine, Folic acid and Jinko (this one I'm not sure is really good). In any case I have seen a big improvement. My memory was not there at all after the big OSA crisis (if I can call it like that, my last 5 months going down the hill before starting cpap). I had a lot of bad synthoms which are almost desapear althoug I'm still a bit tired.

I really believe taking supplements help the brain. I listened to a DVD who speaks about a supplements cocktail a mother doctor created to help her son with Down syndrome. A medical study have been made with kids from I think less than 1 year until I think 12 years old (excuse me I watched that on my bad days) and they proved the kids improved greately. I know somebody who have been given the cocktail to her son and the kid had a really bid improvement in a short period if time and he is still doing really good for a kid with Down.

I think we too have the swollen problem when we don't receive enough oxigen. I thinks supplements can be a most.

.... "Physicians treat memory loss in alcoholic patients with massive amounts of thiamine, or vitamin B1," he added. "We suspect that the dose helps dying cells to recover, enabling the brain to use them again."
....
In a future study, Harper and Kumar will explore whether taking supplemental vitamin B1 helps restore sleep apnea patients' memory. The vitamin helps move glucose into the cells, preventing their death from oxygen starvation.

To enhance brain cell health/repair/new cells, to reduce inflammation, to maintain heart health, I consume:
  • Magnesium citrate 600-800 mg/divided doses
along with everything else it does, it helps calm inflammation
  • Unique E 400 IU/day
amongst everything else it does, it helps re-cyle vitamin C another potent anti-inflammatory
  • D3 8000 IU/day
considered a neurohormone, intimately involved with the immune system
  • Vitamin C & Quercetin combo
    anti-inflammatory of the first order
  • DHA several hundred mgs/day
recommended for babies' developing brains and for older folks (& those with diabetes) to enhance brain function
  • Coromega Fish Oil gel 1 packette/day
source of EPA and DHA, both necessary for normal brain function and health
  • Spaghetti squash instead of pasta or stuffed then baked
    another source of omega 3s
  • Ubiquinol
    active form of CoQ10
  • Iodoral (2 forms of iodine)
source of iodine & compensates for my complete avoidance of salt
  • Garlic & Onions daily, Ginger several times/wk (trying to figure out how to add it to daily diet)
anti-inflammatory, esp protects brain from ALZ (diabetes type 3)
  • Tumeric (contained in curry powder) I add to any dish that's yellow, considering supplementing with it
    see above
  • Avoid grains
    inflammatory effects from their phytotoxins
  • Ditch all veggie oils
hightly inflammatory if not outright toxic to cells
  • Increased consumption of Brazil nuts
    source of selenium
  • Increased consumption of pecans, macadamias, pistachios, almonds, pine nuts
source of natural vitamin E & monosaturated fats
  • Olive oil for salad dressings & meat marinades
    source of monosaturated fats
  • Haas avocados
source of a unique fat that's heart healthy
  • Coconut oil for cooking
potent immune modulator, safe oil for cooking (high smoke pt), normalizes cholesterol
  • Thai Kitchens Premium Coconut milk in shakes or just chilled
healthy fat, normalizes cholesterol, yummy taste
  • Dark chocolate in small amts, the 85% cocoa if in a bar or Ghirardelli unsweetened grd 100% cocao
just too healthy to skip, esp heart healthy & mood upper
  • Beans
    too healthy to skip
  • Dark lettuces
    waay healthier than iceberg
  • Grape Seed Extract 225 mgs/day
125 mgs killed appetite, keep reading good things about this stuff so added another that has some resveratrol
  • Very low carb eating
reduces inflammation, improves lipids, reduces insulin thus inflammation, and it's helping me lose wt
