Eye Protection

Post by AppalachianOne » Thu Jan 28, 2010 10:29 am

If dry eyes are a problem try my solution. Get some swim goggles, remove the buckle and just pull them snug enough through the goggles to stay on. I think this has saved my vision. Look for good quality goggles with different nosepieces for an adjustable fit.

Good luck!

a good idea that I hadnt heard before, eye problems may be caused by air leaking from top of mask
australian, anxiety and insomnia, a CPAP user since 1995, self diagnosed after years of fatigue, 2 cheap CPAPs and respironics comfortgell nose only mask. not one of my many doctors ever asked me if I snored

I just use GenTeal Gel with a plain eye mask. Works for me.

I had tried regular sleeping masks and found that they rode up on my nose just enought to let the bottom of my eye dry out. They stay nice and moist with the goggles. I don't have leaks all the time but it only takes one long night with a leak to make my vision hazy. It's improved some since I started with the goggles. Been on cpap for over 10 years now and the cumulative effects of occasional dry eyes has taken a heavy toll. I use long lasting moisture eye drops too. My eye doctor told me of another patient with that really burned off some layers on her cornea from cpap. Take care all.

Whatever works for you is good.

Just to clarify, I was diagnosed with severe chronic dry eyes before I was diagnosed with OSA. I used Restasis twice an day, wetting drops as needed (sometimes as much as 6-8 times a day) and GenTeal Gel before CPAP. I also have punctal plugs (little things that plug the tear ducts). I just added the eye mask when I moved here two years ago. My apartment faces a major highway (I'll never make that mistake again) with lots of lights.

I suffered from a plugged tear duct last summer from the tiny jets of air that shoot into my eyes from my mask. I went to an eye doc and they recommended Systane Nighttime. It's an ointment that you put in your eyes at bedtime. There are other brands that do the same thing. It took a few days and it fixed the problem.

I use it now and then when I feel my eyes are bothering me.
