Occasional burning nostrils

Post by tattooyu » Wed Jan 27, 2010 5:32 pm

Every once in a while, I wake in the middle of the night with my nasal passages completely on fire! It happened last night, and I can't figure out why. Could it be that on those particular nights, I am having a bad bout of reflux (I take Pepcid before bed each night) and it's making its way to my nasal passages? Most of the time I don't have any reflux I can feel or that gives me symptoms.

It's quite bizarre, and most nights it doesn't happen where I am aware of it at any rate. Humidifier settings haven't changed for a long time. I consistently use a setting of 1.5 on the humidifier which is always comfortable for me.

so do you do sinus rinsing?

I've had these, but only since the turbinoplasty... and only when I needed more humidity. A lot of times I needed to rinse out my sinuses... still getting rid of crap from them.

Humidity in the air is lower in winter. Did you consider raising the humidifier temp gently?

Tattooyu - I change my humidifier setting as the weather changes. Do not change the setting too drastically - try 2 and see how it goes.

Kenny, I change my humidifer settings based on room temp and relative humidity: if it's dry/cold, I turn it up some and if it's warm/rainy, I turn it down.

Forgot to turn it down last night (room temp warmer than preceding night as it was colder outside and we had the heat up) and I had LOTS of pillow rainout...enough that I hadda get up, dry the pillows out, blow nose to dry it, and blot the inside of the mask (that much rainout ) to get a good seal. I won't forget that again I'm sure! I get that burning sensation when my nasal tissue dries out.

Kenny, I also use the Swift LT and have experienced the exact same problem. The "burning" wakes me from a sound sleep and I have to remove the mask for a few minutes. It seems to be a random occurence and each time it's happened to me I have turned the humidifier up a notch. I'm not sure what causes it and am grateful it's only occasional.

I guess it's possible that I needed more humidity. I'm in SoCal so it's hard to know if I need to turn it up, because the humidity doesn't feel much different day-to-day. I do remember the night it happened, I was getting a lot of static shocks that day. "The Weather Channel" iPhone app does show relative humidity. I wonder if that would give me an idea of the humidity inside as well? If not, I know that analog hygrometers are cheap.

Occasionally, I do use a neti pot when I feel congested. It's just so random! The night prior and after the burning sensation, I think the humidity was about the same. There are so many variables I suppose.
