Aw crap! Got the flu

Post by Sleeprider » Mon Jan 11, 2010 10:14 pm

I haven't been sick in many years. I've done my share of gloating as others line up for their flu shots and sent my sympathies to others who were suffering from symptoms. Not it got me thanks to my daughter's visit from PA.

I've been running a low grade fever since Saturday, unproductive cough, endless congestion and some sinus pain. Surprisingly, I stay clear most of the night with decongestants, and the warm humidified air feels very soothing. I'm concerned since I don't have a FF that eventually symptoms will overcome the opening effect of the swift LT. There is no real point to this thread other than to say, "yeah, me too". Maybe I'll find a use for that unused Oxycontin from that procedure a couple years ago .

Anyway, if you've been sick, I can finally say, I know how you feel.

Maybe you won't get it bad. I didn't really know I had it, my doc said you got it. Look at your symptoms. I did and said ok, I just wasted my time and yours.

Why not see if you can find a full face mask that you can use in case you get all plugged up.

Might want to be careful with that Oxy if it's a few years old, might not be as safe to take.......even if you can't get a FF mask for this illness, maybe getting one to for future needs..............I sure hope you do better with this than I did....I really started thinking I was going to become an undesirable statistic when I had H1N1 in October........'twas not good at all!!!!! Be Well.

I don't know the difference between H1N1 and seasonal, but I figure my age group is getting seasonal flu more.

No worries on the Oxy, its still in date (actually from my wife's tooth extraction for braces last month). I don't normally go that way, but it felt so good to be painless and sleep deeply last night, I can see the attraction. Funny because I didn't even take the stuff for things like a cancer excision or (many years ago) vasectomy. I think that stuff is expired.

I'm a little nervous since I'm surrounded by coughs and people feeling yucky. Had both shots but could still get a cold. Every twinge in my throat or ears and I'm waiting for the other shoe to fall. Sure hope your "stuff" passes quickly.

This post reminded me that I'd seen something by old64mg a while back, and I found this:

Apparently anything that depresses the central nervous system can bring on the apnea big time. I think he's talking about similar stuff to oxycontin.

One doc put me on a drug & swore it had no reported side effects...but after months of depression, increasingly weird paranoid nightmares, altered breathing, and thinking I was feeling so bad I must be close to dieing (even started planning how to document for my mom how to contact my 'net friends to tell 'em I'd died...bizarre), I investigated and whoa, lots complaining of what I was experiencing, namely, central nervous system effects. Called my sleep doc re the breathing issue and we had a long chat discussing what to do because the CNS controls all breathing...he was concerned enough to have me come in so he could observe & listen (he's also a pulmonologist). Within 6-8 wks, the effects faded but by then I was losing therapy air and didn't know it...I was so clueless a yr ago .

Sleeprider, I hope you get better soon. If you know your vitamin D level, you can always try the Stoss protocol: http://drbganimalpharm.blogspot.com/200 ... 0k-iu.html

Not that I'm promoting drug use--especially with sleep apnea among other things.........but in case you're playing Jeopardy or some other Trivia Pursuit or just in need of the facts......

As drugs age, they become less effective--EXCEPT for the antibiotic Tetracylcine.

Tetracycline used to be commonly used for acne, still frequently used as an antibiotic. It's a good drug when it is fresh, but if you save them or find them out of date among your stash or mess or whatever.......dispose of them properly before anyone takes them.

Old Tetracycline can cause kidney damage and renal failure.

Hope you're feeling better soon Sleeprider!

While a FFM mask is better than nothing while the nasal passages are blocked its been my experience than good sleep is still not possible

Operational nasal passages are needed for proper breathing

Rest up and get well soon Sleeprider

Well, I'm starting to feel better, but still have a fever around 100, can't hear anything (especially since I was working today at 8000 foot altitude and have returned to about 400 feet). Lets see...oh yes the drugs were good! I slept well and felt refreshed. leak rate stayed low and pressure didn't surge higher. Last night the AHI was 2.0 (0.7 OA, 1.4 H), which is high for me, but not bad considering the chest and nasal congestion. My vibratory snores were only 2.8,

Without the drugs my AHI was admittedly lower at 1.1 (OA 0.5) but snores were up at 12.3 causing wild pressure fluctuations. My average 90% pressure has jumped about 2 cm H2O during this crud, and I'm frequently hitting my peak pressure of 14. I don't see anything of great significance in all this, except to say, ya gotta do what ya gotta do to get in a comfortable place. Unfortunately, rest and relaxation isn't in the cards this week.

Thanks for all the well wishes. You guys are great.

If you didn't show signs of centrals in your PSG, might consider increasing the upper limit on your APAP. If you're bumping up against that limit...

I am sorry! I hope you feel better soon!

I found out today that I have a double ear infection, so I am feeling pretty crummy right with you. But not nearly as bad as you probably feel.

Sleep what you talking about your age groupe getting seasonal flu? I thought you were around my age. Not yet reached middle age.

But hey isn't middle age now between 20 and 80? It is if you ask my kids.

Hope your feeling better soon.
